Software engineer

I want to major in software engineer. A university of Florida professor sent me this:

"Software engineering is what you learn to do in either Computer Science or Computer Engineering at UF. Software engineering is just one of the many career pathways one could take after gaining a degree in either of these programs."

So what's the difference between Computer science and Computer Engineering. If I major in computer Science, will I be able to call myself a software engineer?

-I'm sssooo confused.

Think of it like this:
computer science is more focused on SOFTWARE
computer engineering, while it has software involved, is more about hardware and has focus in electrical engineering.

So, do you want to build servers or code the software those servers use to secure their data?

The latter would be the work of a computer scientist; the former, the work of a computer engineer.

get it got it? This confused me too  Good luck!

I am more interested in coding…

Why is this in the Chances section (meant for guessing games if you will get in a certain college.) Do some reading in the College Majors section on CS. I can’t believe you asked a professor to explain this to you. Not heard of google? or Wikipedian?

Some schools have Software engineering separately but most don’t–they just have CS. Most software Engineers have a CS degree. Some might have CE.

I asked because I was unaware of that. I thought there were a certain major for software engineer separately…
We see that you know something I don’t know. congrats.

You can do Software Engineering with either a CS degree or a Computer Engineering degree. Review which courses are required for each degree, and choose the one that’s the best fit for you.

<a href=“Undergraduate - Computer & Information Science & Engineering”>http://cise.ufl.edu/academics/undergrad/</a></p>

UF offers 3 degrees:

Computer Engineering (CpE)
Computer Science in the College of Engineering (CSE)
Computer Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CSC)

CpE and CSE are the most popular choices. All three can lead to a career in Software Engineering. The above link will give you a more detail explaination, and a listing of courses required for each degree. Review the curriculum for each program.

Good Luck!

You can major in French Literature and call yourself a software engineer.

To be honest, “Software Engineer” is what some companies started calling their employees when “Programmer” became too… broad? It’s basically the same thing - creating software. Also sometimes called Software Developers. These are all Comp Sci industry jobs titles, basically.

Computer Engineering is a field somewhere in between Electronic Engineering and Computer Science.

thanks
