Software Engineering Minor

My school is offering a software engineering minor, I was wondering if you can actually get a job as a software engineer with only a minor. If not what can somebody do with this kind of minor? Does it have any value?

I have a EE degree and did not go out of my way to take CS/programming classes yet I have a job that is usually programming (although not always). It’s more programming than anything else, however.

can you do a CS major/SE minor?

of course if you’re a EE or general engineering major, then yes itll help you get a SE job…my CS teacher was an EE major and he was a software engineer

Definition of software engineering degree seems to vary school by school. I don’t think anyone can give you an accurate answer with the limited information about the curriculum you have provided.

COP 2006 Introduction to Programming (3)

COP 2001 Programming Methodology (3)

COP 3530 Data Structures (3)

COP 3003 Object Oriented Programming (3)

CEN 3031 Software Engineering (3)

These are the only classes required of the minor, I could finish the minor in a single semester and still have enough room for some of my major

I’m a poli sci major by the way, don’t know if i really fit in here! :P

It depends on the needs of that particular employer. If a particular employer has been having trouble finding software engineers from the CompSci, CompEngr and Math majors, they will look at other majors with a software background.

Just do NOT take some SoftEngr set of courses that offers a “course per software engineering phase”. Take all-around software engineering course like the one you posted (CEN-3031).

Looks like a minor in CS, but again, varies from school to school.

Depends the kind of career path. Even if you graduate from a CS, you have a lot to learn from working. So that’s being said, if you find it;s benefitcal and you are interested in it, by all means please do it. We are giving what WE think is the best for “ourselves” literally.
