Software Engineering @ University of Illinois at Champagne

Hello, I was wondering what my chances were in getting into Champagne Urbana for software engineering. Here is some background information:

Pros
+ Computer programming has been my passion all throughout highschool
+ Good at writing essays, will explain my passion well
+ 31 ACT
+ Taking independent study (will submit summary to the college) for software engineering
+ Strong improvement from freshman to senior year
+ Strong work habits/ learning programming at home in my own free time
+ My school removed class rank two years ago
+ (?) low income household

Cons
- GPA (3.45)
- somewhat weak ex-c's (Student council for two years, stage crew for two years, and spanish club + tennis team this year)
- only AP is AP English this year
- in pre-calc due to unfortunate circumstances (set back to the lower math course due to some rough times in middle school)
- out of state
- in a school filled with white over-achievers (I'm white too)

NOTE: if my chances aren't great at getting into the school of engineering at first, how would I go about transferring in sophomore year? Are purdue/madison acceptable alternatives?

for U of I…it will be harder if you live in Illinois because they want tuition from out of state.

Well, I am out of state, but I have also heard that Illinois prefers in-state students.

Alright then.

U of I has a VERY strong engineering program. It makes admissions for that much much harder. You probably heard they prefer in-state because of the fact that most of the students are from in-state, but that is just because they get the most applications from in-state, being from out-of-state increases your chance, in my honest opinion.

Onto you, your ACT is fine for Illinois, should not be a problem in that regard. However, your GPA is a little on the low end. Add on your “weak EC’s” and only finishing through pre-calculus and it makes U of I a long shot. However, Purdue and Madison are great alternatives, and easier to get into. Purdue in particular is known for engineering.

Hope I helped.
