Software used in undergrad MechE?

I will be attending UCSD for MechE beginning this fall and I have a question. From what I hear, most projects and assignments require you to use the computer labs because they have certain software that helps you complete your work. I'd rather just acquire this software and put it on my laptop before the school year starts and be able to just work anywhere. What software is popular and generally used by all schools for engineering? The only one I know of is MATLAB.

alot of my friends use PTC Pro engineering

When I was ME we needed Matlab and SolidEdge for my freshman year.

I go to Cal Poly.

The two main programs we use are Solidworks and Matlab. However, depending on your classes a multitude of different programs can be used.

Solidworks. ProE. CATIA. SolidEdge. Inventor. Ansys. Matlab. Labview.

Matlab the most, I would say.

Matlab, AutoCAD
