Software

So, I was going to buy a laptop today, and in a hasty move I drove to Circuit City without doing any research on Stanford's network/preferred software/anything. When I came home empty-handed to look up said info online, though, I couldn't find much. And now here I am.

Does Stanford offer any kind of software bundle with a student discount? Are there preferred virus protection or Microsoft Office type programs? I've looked at what the Bookstore offers--is it safe to use anything from that list?

Also, would you recommend buying a printer now, or waiting to see if my roommates want to share one instead?

Um, get whatever you want. Stanford gives you virus protection, so that's set, get whatever version of Office that you want, it doesn't matter too much. Student discounts at Stanford (i.e. Dell, IBM) generally suck, except for the Apple ones which are nationwide anyways. Anything from the list at the bookstore is fine.

Just buy a printer, it'll probably be worth it in the long run.

Here's software that Stanford offers for free http://www.stanford.edu/services/ess/ if you haven't seen it yet.
