Some application-process questions ....

Please help in the following issues :-

How ‘common’ is the CommonApp? Does it mean that I fill out just 1 form and the individual supplements and thats it?

How does one go about with the teacher and counselor recs? Filling 10 forms is tedious for them. Can’t they just fill in one form and I do 10 photocopies and send to my univs(and keep the original with me!!)?? And I guess they have to sign all those photocopies(thats OK!!).

I really don’t understand what a varsity sport is. I have done rock climbing for many years. Can I put it in the sport section?

Can I send the teacher recs early? Like in mid July or something? I want to get over with it as soon as possible. Can I send the other parts of the application later?

What the packet from the school consist? Let me guess – teacher recs, counselor rec, my transcript, photocopies of my mark-sheets. OK??

Can any intl specify Academic Honors thing?

Thanks a lot!!! Will keep updating questions!!

1 -- For schools that take the common app (not all of them) you can fill out one form and change the essays (if you want) and supplements (if required)

2 -- Just print 10 copies (theyre typing them, no?) and have them sign them all

3 -- In High School there are 2 levels of sports -- Varsity and Junior Varsity -- Varsity sport members get a Varsity letter...I'm assuming if you don't know what it is, or dont have a letter, then you're not on a Varsity sport...rock climbing would be a rare HS Varsity sport -- but still list it on your app!!

4 -- You should really send them all together, but you can surely have them written in advance...

5 -- Your school should be sending that stuff all together for you...some of that stuff it is Required that it comes from the school, with their official seal

6 -- Not sure what you mean

The teachers do not have to sign each copy. They fill out one form and sign it (and create one letter if they wish and sign it) and then copy them. The signature does not need to be original.

Also, YOU do not make the copies and keep the original; the teachers or your GC do. You fill out the Student portion of the recommendation form, and give it to your teachers, along with a list of schools you're applying to and their deadlines, and stamped addressed envelopes to those schools. (Some schools request that the teachers give the letters to the GC who mails them with the school packet; in that case, you don't need to give the teachers the envelopes. You still need to give them the list and their deadlines.)

See above; your teachers will send them whenever they are ready to do so. As long as it's before deadline, you'll be fine. Do NOT pester your teachers to get the letters ready early.

The school packet contains your transcript, the GC recommendation, perhaps your letters of recommendation (see above), and the School Profile, which explains things like the courses available and any prereqs required to take them (for example, if freshman cannot take AP classes, or if one must take honors chemistry and get a B before one can take AP chemistry, or if no AP classes are offered, the School Profile will say so), and how grades and GPA are calculated.

Thanks a lot!! That cleared a lot of doubts ..... go on please!!

No more replies ... anybody has any different take on any of the queries?

Not all colleges accept the Common App. Some (like Tufts) accept the common app but have lengthy supplemental requirements. Check on the web site of each school to see how you can apply - some schools allow either the Common App or their own App form. The Common App web site shows a list of colleges that accept the Common App.

For the Dartmouth Peer Evaluation, does it have to be sent with the teacher recs and all??

And in the teacher recs portion, do the teachers fill in the space provided or leave it blank and attach a letter that they have prepared??

And do they have to sign all copies or not? I got two different replies ... confused!!

And is it good if I send all the application like in September?? Good or bad?? And suppose if I do a new activity after I send my stuff, do I tell the adcomms about the update?? I am in my gap year, so no scores updates for me.

PS:I took the SAT in March and got a 2010 and sent the scores to my univ. And again I took the SAT in June and got a 2300 and send it to the univs. Will the twice SAT be a black-mark or something?

Reply to the post above :

Teacher recs portion : either one will do. If they can fit it over there they can write or they can attach another letter. Both ways are acceptable and carry equal weight.(i had an english teacher who wanted to type the rec so she typed it out and attached it behind.)

Sign all copies or not : ideally they should sign each copy individually. You can fill in a single form and get copies but try n get em to sign each one.

September? : nothing bad per se but i feel you should wait till november before you send them in but if you want you can send them earlier. And be sure to update the adcom about any new stuff you've been doing if you think it will help your chances.

twice SAT : not a problem at all. importantly your SAT score came up significantly the 2nd time so that would actually be a good thing.

The D peer evaluation can (and usually is) sent separately.

As far as sending apps in Sept, no need to unless the school is rolling, then it will help. Otherwise, I think it would be better to complete everything and send it before the deadline rather than sending in updates later. There's noting wrong with updates, but with all of the paperwork that AOs deal with, simpler is better.
