Some Books

Hey, I was looking at some books at Barnes and Noble and I was wondering what people thought of them. These looked cool/interesting (mostly based on the name)

The Satanic Verses- Rushdie
Elegant Universe- Greene
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas- Thompson
Heart of Darkness- Conrad

Thanks for any help!

The only one I've read is Heart of Darkness... I personally wasn't crazy about it... I found Conrad's writing to be kind of dull, but that probably stemmed from myinherent boredom with the plot. It just wasn't really my cup of tea, but I'm sure some people would like it...

I'm planning on reading The Satanic Verses sometime before I graduate. I don't know much about the story, but I do know that there was a lot of controversy surrounding the book, including a fatwah (spelling?) against Rushdie. Check out Amazon.

Also, Hunter S. Thompson is always a good read. I mean, this is the guy behind Rolling Stone.

Thanks to Matha and jmarsh2006. Im most interested the Verses; is it worth the long read?

heart of darkness sucks. watch apocalypse now. its pretty much heart of darkness in good movie form. seriously though, heart of darkness is horrible. its the kind of reading where you must disect each sentence to fully understand it.

Elegant Universe isn't fiction. It's basically theories about things like the string theory. I saw part of the video of this and unless you like scientific theories, then this is a book to read.

Heart of Darkness is a classic. It might get a little tough at times, but sticking it out will be well worth it. Think about the parallels between the journey into Africa and the protagonists own inner journey...

I liked the Elegant Universe as well. Brian Greene does a phenomenal job explaining physics concepts without any math. Check it out even if you don't necessarily like physics, it's just a very interesting read into the workings of the universe.

Thanx for the advice. Does anyone know anything about the Satanic Verses? Or Rushdie's writing in general?

Rushdie is an idiot. Enough said.

It was an interesting book. I didn't get too much of it, but I read it at a young age. You're an idiot, not Rushdie.

My dad loved it, if that helps. (I doubt it)

Heart of Darkness definately would not be an enjoyable summer reading book.

Ok, no Heart of Darkness. I just ordered The Satanic Verses, The Midnught's Children and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Hopefully I'll like them. Thanks for the help!
