Some concerns about Cal

Hey all,

Congratulations to all that got into Berkeley for the Class of 2013! I'm more than confident that all of you deserve it.

Meanwhile, I have also been accepted to Cal for Fall Semester 2009, but I have a couple of concerns (some that might've been repeated in this forum). In January, I received a Freshman Supplemental Questionnaire from Cal and UCLA -- filled out both and got into both. I have been involved in may ECs and have a UC GPA (10th-11th) of 4.2. I, however, struggle with standardized testing—I got a 1590 on SAT (took it once—took numerous practice tests before) and a 24 on the ACT (took twice, did some studying). I believe I am a bad test taker—I honestly can I have worked hard in my classes, tried to apply what I learned to different things in life, and ask questions and TRY to think critically when doing simple things like problem sets for PreCalc or Physics, so a "below average" ACT score for Cal was surprising. Despite getting in, I am afraid that that score will indicate that I am not prepped for Cal. I don't know if anyone has had similar experiences, but any anecdotes would be welcome to alleviate some apprehension.

Also, competitiveness. Cal is competitive—it's obvious. After talking to a few friends and reading a few posts, it seems like Cal's environment is comfortable and making friends and finding people to support you is not difficult. Also, there are always going to be people who you don't get along with, whether it be at Cal or UCSB or any other university. I think since Cal is so big, the people who you don't get along with can be just brushed aside...so I guess I am stoked for the social environment...still some apprehension, though.

Does anyone have a list of competitive majors? I want to go into law and have selected my major as Legal Studies. I might switch to Poli Sci or Econ, but I'd love to stay with Legal Studies. This major isn't readily available at all schools, so I wonder how it is at Cal?

Any feedback would be welcome! I got into 6 UCs (didn't apply to Riverside, Irvine, and Merced), but I have narrowed it down to Davis and Cal!

Thanks for the wonderful fellowship feeling in this forum!

Econ would be considerably more competitive and harsher on your GPA than the others you mentioned. Stay clear of the pre-med weeders if you can.

Come to Cal. You sound intelligent.
More competitive majors include the sciences, engineering, pre-business…and more.
