Hi,
I have only studied art for one year due to my late transfer to an international school. I'm worried about my portfolio as I really lack the technical skills and training. I'm applying to fine art/ fashion design majors at Parsons and many comprehensive universities(e.g. UMich Stamps, NYU Steinhardt etc.) My art teacher thinks my portfolio is good though. I'll attach 20 pieces of my current works for portfolio in flickr. Could you please help me select the best works and provide some critiques? Also, are my chances really low? Will the universities take my late start into account?
Thanks in advance!!!

So I’m thinking of adding some fashion illustrations and observational drawings. Any advice?

It’s good. I would replace this one https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/129759742@N05/15751297519/in/set-72157647254684624 , this one https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/129759742@N05/15315124154/in/set-72157647254684624 , and this one https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/129759742@N05/15936698362/in/set-72157647254684624 though. They’re not quite the same standard as the rest. Your portfolio in general is strong.

Thank you! Do you think I should include more observational drawings? I think drawing vases and bottles may be too cliche, any ideas of creative & expressive objects? I don’t know if colleges will take into account that I have only studies art for one year…

I totally agree with marvin100. The three he indicated I would pull out. I wouldn’t submit the observational drawings. Do you have others that relate to the ones that you are submitting? It seems a little disparate, so two or three more along the same lines as others you have would be great. I agree; strong with LOTS of potential.

Thanks a lot!! D Do you mean “observational drawings” by these two pieces https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/129759742@N05/15750068160/in/set-72157647254684624 and https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/129759742@N05/15911573016/in/set-72157647254684624? Most of my pieces are just surrealist drawings from imagination so I am not sure how to relate my observational drawings to those… The main thing that I’m worried about observational drawings is my technical skills.
Thanks again!

i love your house foreclosure one, that was very cute

Thank you, but which one do you mean? :-/

Doesn’t Parsons says 8-12 samples? And, have you clarified whether you need to include more traditional pieces to show the range of your talent?

lookingforward
This is the range of my work that I’m thinking of including in the portfolio. I’ll need to draw more traditional pieces but I’m not quite sure what to draw I’ll be grateful if you can give me some suggestions!

Sending you a PM. Then you have to make sure you make your best decisions.

No, keep those two, those are great!!! You had asked if you should add some drawings with bottles and vases; that’s what I meant by more observational drawings. If they are as good as the one with paint brushes, I would, but I wouldn’t just submit something more just to have quantity. Check to see what each school is requesting because requirements are different for every school.

I see… Most of the schools ask for 3 or more observational drawings so I’ll have to add more of them. Thanks!!!

lookingforward
Thank you!
