Some detail please

Hello all,

I am an American student wishing to apply to uWaterloo for Mechatronoc engineering. I am currently in grade 11 and have kept decent marks in 2 of the 6 necessary courses for engineering, which are precalculus and chemistry (85 and 82 percent)

I am taking the other prerequisites next year (ap calculus, physics, chemistry, literature, and an arts course).

My question is, however, all my other eleventh grade marks are pretty poor. Would that affect my chances into Waterloo?

I have talked to uWaterloo about this multiple times and they have given me the same response about only looking of the 6 prerequisites, SAT, and AIF. I wish to apply for fall of 2013.

Your clarifications are appreciated.

I have hope I will do extremely well my senior year. 90% and above.

Mechatronic engineering* not mechatronoc…

I have received at least 5 replies such as these for my inquires:

Yes, only 6 courses are required for admissions: calculus, physics, chemistry, english, pre-calculus and one other senior academic course.

Thanks,

anything would be of help.

I don’t think you need to ask a sixth time.

The admissions page is fairly clear:

Grade 11 marks matter for early admission (because your Grade 12 marks aren’t all in yet) or for some special programs such as AFM.

I wouldn’t worry about it unless your grades really suck, which is too late to fix now anyway. Just make sure you have safeties.

really suck as in…? I have a D+ (67) in Spanish III Honors. and a C+ (78) in AP Language. Would this affect my chances and would senior year marks, if they end up very good, aide me in terms of admission?

I’m going to Waterloo for Software Engineering next fall. I don’t know about the specific department, but I do know that engineering did care about overall percentage (or so it seems from what I read). I’m going to assume they put emphasis on these classes, but will require you to maintain decent grades in the others. Unfortunately, your chances may be slim with those grades. If you want to find out more information, go to the StudentAwards website, which is basically the CollegeConfidential of Canada. There are people who are currently attending that can help you much further with your dilemma over there.

Thank you and I have already done so. They said I would have a good chance if I did really well next year (all A’s basically). And I lead two robotics teams as well, which I mentioned on student awards.

No problem! I wish you the best of luck. Just try to keep those grades up next year and then I think you’ll definitely have a chance.

hmm that seems good. [Admission Averages | Engineering](Admission Averages | Engineering | University of Waterloo)

Does AP Chemistry fulfill the chemistry requirement? I have chemistry honors now, but which would they consider. (assuming both marks are available.)

^ From what I gather on the links you have posted, non-AP Chemistry is acceptable and anything beyond is gravy. You’ll be fine with AP Chem.
