Some doubts regardin app. !!!! ..

heyy guys i m really havin some doubts over certain sectors of app. please help me out ..

in the evaluation A .. its for a science or a math teacher ,, so do a computer science teacher fall in the criteria ?? and does sending additional evaluations help ??

i m actually considering a major in CS , and i know that i m quite good at it , the problem is that whatever i do actually goes from right above my teacher's head .. i know that MIT provides a section to give a brief intro about any project that u have done in any area .. bu will that be enough to show my passion to 'em ?? .. i mean can / should i do anythin more ??

i have received quite low scores in SAT subject tests .. i dunno why .. i have received 730 in all three ,i.e., maths level II,physics and chem ,while i have done extremely well in many national and some international olympiads !!.. i m considering to take a retest in january , can u please tell me the level of my scores ?? .. and any advises for the upcoming effort ??

one of my seniors got in MIT with a SAT I score of 1760 ,was it only a chance ..i mean if i somehow receive a score like that will my app. be straight forward thrown out ?? ,, what are the appreciated scores for SAT I .. what about the range 2000-2100 ??

what is the importance of scores both SAT I/II how will they affect my app ??

i m an international applicant so please judge me with this in mind ..

if u want i can even post some of my stats over here i mean it can help u all to make an image of strengths and weaknesses for my app ... should i ??

please reply soon to most of the questions above .. pleeeaaassee ..!!

1) AFAIK, the system processes only one evaluation A and only one evaluation B. Any other “supplemental” letters of recommendation must be submitted as supplemental material with the supplemental document cover provided in your MyMIT account. A computer science teacer definitly satisfies [the criteria](Letters of recommendation | MIT Admissions) for eval A. Additional letters may help but they should show a different side of you.

2) I don’t understand what you mean here.

3) Anything above 700 is considered good. Therefore your 730s are fine. If you want, you can try going for a 800 in Math2.

4) As we understand, MIT doesn’t look at your writing score(there has been some controversy about essays, that might be the reason). Therefore a 1760 might be a good score. I don’t know if they have a cutoff point but try not to go below 700 in each section, especially math. If English wasn’t your language of education for the last 2 years, you can and should take TOEFL instead of SAT-I, especially if you are worried about Critical Reading section and such.

5) Scores are only one piece of the whole application, there are essays, letters, extracurriculars.

As a general advice, remember that MIT considers an applicant based on how good the applicant has utilized the opportunities around him/her. International applicant pool is always very competitive, so you want to provide your best case.

heyy Phoestre Thank you very very much man … you have always been around to help me out whenever i m surrounded bu troubles … well yes i will try for a 800 in Math … thanks for that … and as u have said that other scores are fine so i m not gonna discuss much about 'em …
by the 2nd point i meant that MIT really wanna see my passion for my field of interest but i actually do not see any particular section for that … so any advises about how m i supposed to comprehend with that ??

last but not the least you told me to provide my best case as i know i actually live in a scarily competitive place … but would you please elaborate that point ?? … i mean what do u , the admission office and of course MIT is expecting from me over that point … and how i can optimize my approach for the best possible outcome ?? and not to forget actually how am i supposed to do that too … please dun scold me very hard but i m really quite confused as this is the first ever application of this type i m ever filling out … … !!

Lets get some stuff straight first kamehameha  I don’t work for or am not affiliated with MIT in any way, I’m just an applicant like you. It is just that I have been reading this forum and the website for more than a year and had lots of experience at MIT this summer.

In the section “Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why?”, you can write an essay explaining your passion for your field of interest.
Focus on improving your essays  You can write a few sentences but try to tell them as much as you can about yourself in a decent way, so they can see your passion. Use a clear language, you need to be like neither the mob in the back alley nor Shakespeare.

If you have time, retake the subjects(with priority for Math2). As I understand that you are an international, I say you should take TOEFL too, which you would score a lot higher compared to your SAT-I.

Try to keep your GPA high.

heeyy mann thanks a tonne … so are u applyin this year too ??

Heyy guys … i have been doing some research around my place and ummm … i have actually fallen in a deep hole of despair … like i wrote above i received 730 in all three SAT Subject tests … and i kinda like asked around about my chances and they said that your application wont even be read and like that … i know MIT Chris wrote that once you cross the 700 mark u r pretty safe and so did Phoestre above … but just takin a case i mean if someone gets pure 800s and my application is put up against him/her’s … so would i be simply rejected on the basis of level of competition … ??? … iknow (lol that sounds an apple product :stuck_out_tongue: ) … i mean i know i have asked this a lot but each time i m just replied with “they are fine” over here and a “u r simple case of rejection” by my colleagues and all near me … so please clear the dilemma with a straight forward answer … and i m appearing for SAT II in January as well so please suggest me with that in mind !!! … otherwise i would try to give the date to SAT I …

Remember all the other parts of your application? Your SAT scores are fine. The rest of the application is going to be what gets you in. SAT scores around 700 just help prove you should go in the running.

heyy PiperXP … long time to hear from u really … missed ur advises a lot this whole summer …!!
and umm hahahahahah … yeah i do remember the other parts… but still i mean i just wanted to know i mean how much lift could my essays and evals give to my app ?? … and of course with these scores in context if u could plzz …

As far as I’ve observed: The essays, unlike the difference between 700 and 800, can either make or break your application.
I have no idea about evaluations but if your teacher evals are bad, it can hurt your application a lot. However I don’t know if the reverse is correct. (if the evals are good, would it help a lot?)

yeah … but as i see dun scores play the same part in the range you specified … i mean certainly they will recruit a person with 800s rather than 700s seeing that he/she is not academically sound … if u see it this way … if ur app is put up against 15 more with straight 800s and urs alone with 700 … doesnt that makes ur app eligible to leave the room ???
and what do you say the preference is put to SAT I or SAT II ?? i mean i m sure they look up the context and all …the SATs are far more different from the pattern of tests we give over here … sure the objective pattern is more or less the same but yet everything is much different … i mean u haven’t hear about GMO rite ?? it is Group Mathematics Olympiad … it comes as a paper with 5 questions and a time limit of 6 hours … but the SATs have a much more different pattern and all and all and all … but how will they know all this ?? … they simply have the score to compare with … that’s it !! …

so my point is that the essays and evals. will be seen only after our apps pass the criteria of scores right … and even talking about essays , they will be read with our scores in context … as far as i think not the other way round (i mean not looking at our scores with context to our essays) … thats what my main question is … are the scores so damn important , and if yes which one SAT I or SAT II … hey and umm Phoestre … can u share ur score if u have received them pllzzz ??

You are “selectively” reading what I wrote.

The scores don’t say anything about you, other than how qualified you MAY be academicly. Once you pass a certain point, several times stated as around 700 by other people too, it is all blurred. Maybe you were sick, calculator issue, or it was just a bad day, and missed a few questions. The difference between 700 and 800 is just 4-6 questions. Colleges know that and look at other indicators such as your GPA and evals to better understand you.

I don’t think there is a preference between SAT-I or SAT-II. They all show a different academic qualification. You can talk about GMO in your essays OR you can ask your Counselor or Math Teacher to explain it, if you are convinced that the Admissions Committee won’t understand it.

If there is a cutoff point, your 730s would definitly be above this point. I don’t know how it works in your country but in most parts of the world, people are compared by computer against each other based on solely university entrance exam scores and in some places also GPAs. This is NOT true for most US colleges, especially MIT.

If you are so worried about your scores, then retake. But please try to understand that your ECs, essays and evals will have a higher impact since you are already in the good score range.

P.S: I got 800 Math2, and 760 Physics.

man u have fantastic scores … congrats on that part really … and thanks a lot … all that u wrote above is actually very very true … and yes even in my country it is like that … hope u heard about IIT-JEE … it is the second toughest examination in the world … and that is solely upon the marks u score … not anythin else anythin at all … so yeh u r rite i m pretty worried on this account only …

i know you are rite about the scores and i will retake it anyway on January test date … so when r u givin ur SAT I or have u already given it ??? …

and umm what all documents r u sendin to the admissions office ?? …

i mean for what all grades or classes r u sendin ur transcripts ?? …

and r u sendin any additional evals or essays or anythin ??

and BTW in the app part 2 … there is a section that asks about any projects that u have done and all and a brief description in that … so should it only be related to science ?? … and do we have to send only one ?? … and how do we have to send that ?? …

I have already sent my stupid SAT critical reading score!!! What should I do to make that to TOEFL

i think you send you TOEFL score too … as MIT admissions says … they only take the score that shows you the best in front of the admission committee !!!
