Some examples of who gets into Bucknell

From my daughter’s high school:

GPA SAT Math Verbal
86.41 600 540 (recruited athlete)
93.67 740 710
91.50 710 650
92.95 800 750

89.47 690 680 (waitlisted)
93.17 610 640 (waitlisted)
90.64 680 730 (waitlisted)

83.98 670 600 (rejected)

The only one who went was the athlete.

Where does your daughter go to high school? Judging from the large number of applications I assume east coast?

Fortunately stats aren't the only thing Bucknell is looking for. Perhaps some of the students in the mid-range stats did not have any extra curriculars of substance? Or enthusiasm? Bad essay? There also seem to be a lot to pick from at that particular high school, it's only natural that a school would select from the top, even if those students are unlikely to attend.

It's hard to look at a GPA and tell much out of context. Some schools have no weighted grades, no grade inflation, and are smaller....so a 93 GPA might actually put you in the second decile or even lower. Other schools have rampant grade inflation, large classes etc...so a 93 might put you in the top decile. In other words a 93 at one school may be their saludatorian, at another it may be somewhere down in the 12-15% range. The smaller colleges can look at applications more holistically.

Then there are other factors such as geographic diversity to consider.

The average SAT at Bucknell has risen over the last few years to about 1350 (old SAT) according to the last profile sent to parents. I have yet to see one with the new SAT figures. Adding in the old SAT II writing my son would have had a 2180 on the new test...and he was about the average admit to Bucknell his year. He is not an athlete, legacy, or hooked in anyway.

Edit: he had a 3.85 unweighted GPA at a school WITH grade inflation.

i have a friend he had a 3.54 weighted erm something like a 2000 on sats got an 800 on writing but didn't crack 600 on math i forget the other section....he did have legacy but he got accepted in the early

I had a 760 V, 650 M, roughly 3.4 gpa from a top prep school in CA where I was actually in the fourth quintile of my school, with no legacy and nothing athletically enticing. I know I had amazing recs from teachers who knew me well and were more like friends/aunts than like teachers, and my essay was pretty good if I do say so myself. 'Ray bucknell!

Topping for Carmen.
