Some good STATE universities with relatively cheap tuition? OOS.

Hi, I'm an international student applying this year, and I realized that it would be extremely risky if my list consisted only of schools to which I'm applying for financial aid.

If tuition+living costs are around 30000 USD a year, I think my family will be able to manage. Again, I plan to work during the holidays and work hard in school to be eligible for a merit scholarship--however small. Important thing is, however, I won't be applying for financial aid, which would make it a lot more reliable.

My stats are fairly good
SAT: Math Critical Reading Writing
770 740 700
690 760 720

Weird mix of scores, I know :P Hopefully, they'll look at the highest ones..

AP: English Lang 4 World History 5, Biology 5
SAT IIs: Literature 750 Biology 750 World History 780 Math lv2 770
homeschooled =no GPA although I'm sending in alot of extra writing supplements
although my writing score on the SAT sucks, I'm a strong writer, and all my essays are compelling and smoothly written.

Are there any state schools you could recommend to me?

Cost is the most decisive factor, although I would prefer either the east or west coast, generally. But feel free to suggest schools elsewhere as well..

Many thanks in advance.

Some I already found:

CUNY schools
SUNY schools (rolling admission, though a bit meh)
SDSU (application ended in november -_-)

any more??

University of Minnesota is considered one of the lower cost public universities. You’d have to get hopping. I think the priority deadline was Dec 15 and then they take much longer to get a response to you.

COA per year for OOS students for OOS Public U’s

mom2collegekids, it might help to put that list in order of cost

I think the OP can do that little bit of work.

The OP is an international. Many state universities have even higher tuition for international than for OOS U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

I believe the OP is going to have to carefully check what the rules are for someone in his/her position.

@mom2collegekids

The list was great, it’s just that total fees that surpass 30G is a little bit too much…

Minnesota seems great, however, but I don’t think I’ll be able to make it in time…=(

I did find one more college, though: ASU; cheapest tuition I’ve seen so far with an extremely high acceptance rate of 90 percent. My ultra backup perhaps…

Actually, ASU’s non-resident tution is the same or higher than some state schools, including some in the list above. ASU’s non-resident tuition is about $20k per year. That’s the same or higher than several above schools.

The list above is COA…tuition, fees, room, board, books, personal expenses. The COA for AzSt is

Arizona St University
Cost -2009-2010 Academic Year …Total Cost of Attendance (COA)
Tuition & Fees … 20,229
Books/Supplies (visit ASU Bookstore) …1,270
Room (see housing rates) … 5,610
Board (see meal plan rates) …3,600
Transportation … 750
Personal … 2,170
Loan Fees … 46
**Total …$33,675 **

Wichita State University - US$ 18,503 for 12 credit hours a semester. For 15 credit hours a semester … US$ 22,544. This is the international rate. There are lots of opps for internships, etc - as Wichita is the largest urban city in Kansas. If you are interested in any kind of aviation or engineering - even better - as wichita is the aviation capital. There are many terrific programs there - and lots of international students - I’m sure in large part due to the affordability without financial aid. Check it out!

BTW that cost includes insurance, books, housing, meals, tuition and fees!

The wonderful thing about the internet is that pretty much every ranking and bit of information desirable is out there, if one takes the time and effort to find it.

In this instance, Kiplinger’s ranking is quite useful. All of the colleges mentioned so far are on it, as well as dozens more.

[100 Best Values in Public Colleges](Best College Values, 2019 | Kiplinger)

^ #1 is UNC? They don’t even offer my major. What kind of value is that? ;)

I think California State University are cheap for international students. I’m an international student attending to a Californian community college right now and I want to apply to University of Minnesota - Twin cities because it is relative cheap compared to others international tuition. So it has been a while since you post this thread I wonder what university did you get in and how are u doing with tuition and the school (overall)

M2CK, Alabama is one of a number of public schools that offer scholarships based upon certain SAT / GPA thresholds. Do you know how they address that with homeschoolers and whether international students are excluded from those scholarships?

Minot State University–Minot, North Dakota

$5,638 annual tuition and fees for international students.

[Minot State University - Enrollment Services](<a href=“MSU - Minot State University”>http://www.minotstateu.edu/enroll/tuition.shtml)

Don’t overlook private schools. Some of them (particularly lesser known names) may have a total price comparable to OOS publics.
