Some grammar help please

<p>How come in this sentence it is </p>

<p>During the nineteenth century, Charles Dickens BECAME one of the most famous British novelist.</p>

<p>while in this sentence, it is </p>

<p>My little brother HAS GROWN two inches during the past year,</p>

<p>Or in other words, why is the first sentence simple past and the second past perfect when both have the clause "during..." to specify a time?</p>

<p>The implication in the second is that the past year includes the present moment. The growth is continuing, not finished. </p>

<p>“My little brother GREW two inches during the past year” would imply that the year is done.</p>
