Some help, please?

Hi All!

I'm currently a Freshman at Colgate University and am definitely considering (read: definitely going to) submit a few transfer applications for next year. I have plenty of reasons: mainly the lack of an artistic presence on campus (like, none), the dominating frat scene, the lack of an active LGBT community, the lack of anything in the surrounding area (Hamilton...what are you going to do?), and the lack of any kind of diversity in the students here, and the dominating greek social scene (which I personally want no part of). I'm an aspiring actor/entertainer/performer and am planning on majoring in theater, so I'm looking for schools that are the same caliber of Colgate academically but with more of an artsy feel to them with a strong theater major. Another reason I want to leave is because I think there are only 8 theater majors AND minors in the entire school and I want to be around people who actually ENJOY the arts.

Don't get me wrong, Colgate's not all bad, and the friends I've made here aren't my reason for wanting to leave at all, and the professors and the classes are all wonderful and all that jazz, but I just know that I could be happier somewhere else.

I got a 30 on my ACT's (not super great, I know) and I have two 700 SAT II subject test scores (Lit and Bio E), I graduated in the top 5% of my high school class (either 5 or 7 out of 150)(I went to an arts high school in Philadelphia). I'm also the first person in my family to go to college (if that even matters). This last semester, I took:

Intro to Psych (B)
Elementary Spanish I (B)
Basic Acting (A)
and one of our CORE classes called "Legacies of the Ancient World." (Basically, a classical literature class). (B)

Making my final GPA for this fall semester a 3.25. Which kind of sucks. But I know Colgate is known for grade deflation (a 3.3 would have put me on the dean's list) so I'm hoping that won't make me look too bad in the eyes of other adcoms, and definitely working to get all A's in the spring. I've also joined our club volleyball team and one of Colgate's theater groups, and I'm planning on joining a choir in the spring as well. Plus I have two jobs on campus, one at the library, and one working for the volleyball team for home games.

My first choices are probably Wesleyan and Brown (which, with my GPA, is probably a waste of time), and I was thinking about Vassar (but I know they hardly accept ANY transfers), so I was looking for some more suggestions for similar schools/a chance at a successful transfer. Any help you guys would be willing to give would be amazing and I'd be so grateful. Thanks for your time!

Buuuuumppp. Do you guys think I should wait until Soph year when I can bring my GPA up some?

No one?? I’m desperate guys, I really don’t think I can get through three more years of this place.

Bumpppppppppp. Still searching for some advice.

You need a better GPA than the one you currently have, I would say for Wes and Brown your chances are almost zero.

Both have an extremely competitive applicant pool, so they generally accept 3.7s and above, but a 3.25 is far too low. Whether Colgate has grade deflation or not is almost irrelevant in other schools eyes, all they want are results, so if your results do not match their standards, they care little about how tough your schools grading is (unless maybe if you’re in a difficult major like chemical engineering or CS).

Stay for another year and raise your GPA. Moreover, you may want to consider not transferring at all. Colgate is a fine college, all you need to do is find your niche to be happy.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking that’s what I would have to do anyways. And it’s more than about finding a niche, I think. I can say that I am genuinely unhappy with the student body as a whole as well as being in the middle of nowhere, NY and the lack of interest in the arts.
But I’ll just keep my grades up and see what happens at the end of this semester. Thanks again, I really do appreciate the help and am looking for more people’s two cents!

Also, sorry for double posting, but would my chances still be shot even if my Mid-term Report showed all A’s?
