Some insight please. - University of Michigan

Interested in Umich.

My recalculated GPA is 3.9
I'm rank 9 of barely under 200 kids.
I have taken 6 dual enrollment classes, I'm taking my first AP my senior year, so an above average courseload, but nothing spectacular.
ACT
Composite: 32
Reading: 34
English: 35
Science: 31
Math: 28

I have very few extra curriculars.

I play an instrument, performing occasionally with the school even though I'm not in band.
I did debate in 11th
I work 20 hours a week.
I am doing Quiz Bowl.
I will be participating in a Foreign Exchange program

I have no awards aside from "all-a honor roll" type things, and one Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp scholarship (I went to the camp, but forgot to list it under activities, oh well.)

I'm white, and in state.

How do you guys think that places me? What are my chances? Thanks.

You have a good chance, as long as you apply early.

I applied September 21st. Considerably early... considering that they didn't get computer problems fixed until weeks after that, so I imagine I'll be in the first batch.

You have an excellent shot of getting in. I would be completely shocked if you didn't.
I'm sorry that this is completely unrelated, but:
What did you get the scholarship for (dance, instrument, etc)?
If you are in the Metro Detroit area (I would guess that you are) what division of Quiz Bowl (eastern or western) are you in?

The scholarship was for bass going into the jazz band. We're Western, I guess, this is my first year in it and I'm not really sure, but we recently qualified for state.

I thought UMich is a pretty selective school like top 30... ? his scores are pretty good, but his ecs seem very weak. (no offense)

No, actually since when you file the application is key to UMichigan, his applying early and reletively strong stats will get him accepted. Now if he waits until the new year, his lack of ECs may come into play and the results might be different.

Ummmm, the people I went to school that got into Michigan had a lot lower scores than that.

The lowest one... was a friend who had a 3.67 GPA UW
29 ACT
no SAT II's, 2 AP classes, and only Orchestra as the EC.

this is last years.

Man, well that brings some hope I guess. People have such varied opinions about all of this, some people think that I definitely won't, others think I definitely will and others think I have "a good chance." I'm just extremely nervous, but thanks for the help anyway.

Average unweighted GPA at Michigan is 3.72, although 28% of last year's admitted class were the valedictorians at their high schools. The average ACTs are around 27, so with 32 you look good.

You should have no problem with you 3.9, despite the ECs, as long as you applied early. IsleBoy is right on the mark with his comments on early apps at Michigan. Personally I think you would even get in if you applied late (though that is not the case, obviously).

Good luck.
