I wonder if there are any McGill Science students out there who can help me. My son is accepted to Science with an IB diploma and projected 30 advanced standing credits. This will put him in year 1. The Science Fac advisors told him he has to finish his degree within 127 credits - basically this means no electives and graduating in 3 years. While the 3 year graduation time could be considered a positive thing, there is another potentially insurmountable problem. Because he gets credit for his IB Physics HL exam for Physics 101 & 102 (the non calculus physics) they actually told him he is not allowed to take 131 & 142 - the more difficult calculus based physics (he wants to major in physics). This is really a deal breaker since he feels he needs the review before he begins the more difficult coursework. The advisors even told him he should not sit for the IB physics exam if possible, but that is not possible since his admission is contingent on the IB diploma! Anybody have this experience?

My younger brother was also accepted to McGill Sciences and he is also in the IB programme. Your son should have been played into mandatory advanced placement like all IB diploma students. All IB students are obligated to go straight to second year at McGill. This should not be an issue for your son…

Thanks - the issue is that he has not had as rigorous a freshman program in the sciences at his US IB high school, and would be behind the others. Probably he will elect not to come to McGill.
