Some last minute questions

How many colleges can you apply to? I am planning on sending an application to around 20 colleges. Is there any negative impact?

If you just arrived in the US for a few years, will it boast your chances?

Can you take the SAT a fourth time? Will your score be averaged, etc, etc…

Does anyone have the list to the top 50 or so business or marketing colleges in the country?

if you attend a not-so-good school that sends only a few students to the top colleges a year, will it help you?

What colleges do you think i can get into with a 2.93GPA, 3630/4000 SAT and average EC?

Thanks!

No, apply to as many as you want, although the best advice is to stick around 5-10 colleges. There is absolutely no negative impact unless the college you choose asks you what other colleges you apply too, and the college feels it is a safety school, etc.

In my opinion it may hurt your chances, but that is based on years of reading posts on this website (yes years lol).

The MYTH that your score will be averaged is a MYTH (lol). Basically you SHOULD NOT take the SAT a fourth time, three times should be the maxiumum. But no one will stop you from taking the SAT a fourth time, it just does not look good for college admissions.

Top 50 business colleges, search google. To namy some of the best (Wharton in UPENN, Stern in NYU).

It will not help you, it may in fact hurt you because you have to be even better to show that your inflated grades or the fact that you are ranked so high is not just because the school consists of not the brightests students. But basically, the school you go to is not a HUGE admissions factor.

What does 3630/4000 mean lol?

np =)

Why will it hurt me?

SAT + 2 subject tests

You can, but you shouldn't. Your teachers need to write recommendations for all of those schools, and it costs a lot--at $50 each, that's $1000 on applications alone. Honestly, that's ridiculous.

I'm not sure, but it depends on your situation (i.e. citizenship status, country you were in and why, english language ability, etc.).

Again, you can, but you shouldn't (unless you have ninth grade scores or something like that).

US News probably does.

It doesn't matter much, from the way you put it. It will help an outstanding applicant from a horrible school (think worst in country) who overcame great adversity to even think about applying to college, but that's it.

You need to post your individual scores for anyone to get a good idea of what they are, but at an average of 720 a subject and a relatively low GPA, your options will be unique. It will look like you simply don't apply yourself unless there is a reason for your low grades. Any possible college choices will depend on why your grades and SATs don't match up.

6.

Thank you for your reply!

Hmm 770 math, 690 verbal, 640 writing, 800 chinese, us history.

And the reason for my low GPA is simply because I didn't try. I assume that will really hurt my chances at the top 50 schools?

Yes, to get into top colleges you need top grades.

I'm sure the lower end of the top 50 you have a chance...And I really, REALLY don't suggest applying to that many schools. If you were accepted to all of them, which would you go to? Are there any that you really don't think you'd go to if you were accepted into any other school? Pick 2 reaches, 2-4 matches, and 2 safeties; if there are other schools you feel you must consider, add them, but 20 is crazy.

Is it crazy because it costs too much or will it hinder my chances? Most on my list are reaches anyways and I consider it as some sort of lottery :)

here is my list:

(business/marketing/economics major)

ucb
ucla
ucsd
uci
ucsb
ucd
ucsc
ucr
ucm
cal poly slo
cal poly p
usc
pepperdine
nyu
boston
chicago
northwestern
carnagie mellon
babson
emory
claremont mckenna

I am a cali resident btw. Can anyone sort them out for me into reaches/matches/safeties etc?

And can anyone also recommend a few more choices for me if possbile

Thanks!

ucb - reach
ucla - reach
ucsd - reach
uci - reach
ucsb - reach
ucd - reach/match
ucsc - match/safety
ucr - match/safety
ucm - match/safety
cal poly slo - safety
cal poly p - safety
usc - match?
pepperdine
nyu - reach/match
carnagie mellon - reach

don`t know about the rest.

and honesty, are you really applying to all of the UCs?
it`s better to cut it to no more than 5-6.

Well lets just hope my 0.0001% chance to Cal pays off :) . So ya, I think I will apply to all of the UC. Maybe I will cut 1-2 which doesn't offer the major I am seeking like Davis.

Is cal poly slo really a safety? Thought its like really hard or something. And USC as a match is a real encouragement!

Thanks!

cal poly slo? it`s not that hard... at least i know people with 3.0 GPAs getting in, unless they had some kind of hook that made them outstanding.

usc is probably match, more of the reach side though. it`s one of those tougher matches. i do know strong & mediocre academic people getting into usc, so you might have a chance as well.

it seems to me that you are a Chinese immigrant who arrived in America a few years ago and is now living in california obviously (socal?)... don`t ask me why i thought of this... i know a lot of people who are in this situation.

"And the reason for my low GPA is simply because I didn't try. I assume that will really hurt my chances at the top 50 schools?"

You are right. Colleges want students who are willing to work hard academically. The best predictor of college grades is NOT SAT scores, but is high school gpa.

if you attend a not-so-good school that sends only a few students to the top colleges a year, will it help you?

UC's give extra points for schools that are very bad. But that's only the very very worst schools.

Unfortunately my school isn't really that bad.

And ya northstarmom, I kind of regret it now but its too late anyways.

kchen, you are right! I live in LA

HA! i knew it was some large urban city in the south.

1 more question. Will it look bad that I have retaken a D, a D and a F?

And more comments regarding the colleges please!

Why are you applying to schools that don't offer the programs you're interested in?

I could be wrong, but this thread gives me the impression that you're more interested in getting into a prestigous school than a school that fits you. If you want to be happy in college, that's probably a mistake.

Thanks for the advice. But I am definately more interested in the program than the school. And thats why I chose Babson, CMU, NYU, Boston, NW, etc etc. Some of the UC that doesn't offer the programs I like are kind of like a reserve. If I got into Davis, for example, and is rejected from everywhere else then obviously I will go there. I really don't want to go to a CC and transfer or waste 200k on a private college thats not even good (like out of top 100 or something). Besides, Davis does at least have an econ program right? The only reason I am going to college is to have an alternative skill that I can use if my dad's business fails. And I do understand how many people drop out because they often apply undeclared just to get into a top ranked college. Thank you for your concern!

"Yes, to get into top colleges you need top grades."

Untrue/10

You CAN get into Harvard with a C average and 1600 SAT, like my buddy.

"You CAN get into Harvard with a C average and 1600 SAT, like my buddy."

There has got to be more, much more, to that story. About 50% of students with 1600s on the old SAT got into Harvard, and probably most of the students who apply with 1600 scores have far greater than C averages. I even heard of a girl who had 1600s and who had won the teen beauty contest for her state who was rejected by Harvard.

The students whom I have heard who got in with 1600s had a lot going for them grades, rank, character and some excellent ECs.
