Some more chances

Ok well, i feel i should check my chances once again since mid year reports are out and all. (CMU = first choice)

The main problem is my gpa is way below because of my freshmen/soph year (horrible time)
Overall my gpa without 1st semester of senior year is 3.2 but thats with a 3.7, 3.8 junior year.

However this semester i have a 3.9 GPA with a 4.4 weighted so that will help out a lot. I also take more classes than most other students (10 classes) so thats another thing.

Can you tell my what you think my chances would be at:
SCS (first choice) / CIT / TEPPER / MCS

oh and i did have an interview that went well.. (trying as hard as i can to boost chances)
And i go to one of the best schools in the united states + everyone who has currently applied to CMU (we have a record) has been accepted but i dont know which sub-school they applied to.

I don't know how good your school is but it seems like you're very qualified and very math/tech oriented. Therefore I'd say:

SCS: reach-match (SAT scores might hurt but your E.C.'s and application is very CS organized.)
CIT: match (good focus on math/tech)
Tepper: match (not as business oriented so SATs will hurt you a bit more here, also depends on how much the increase in apps will hurt you).
MCS: match

I go to Whitney High School (#1 in california, top 10? in USA) for sure.

when did you hear back from CMU?

Mid March I think.

to opitsweirdisntit:just to let you know, I had few friends that owned their own comp prog. companies--one of them made lots of money, setting wirless up for cafe, etc...
so while it is goosi dont think its that unique

@stoneterrain: I never said that would be unique (the teaching is)

my apologies, didnt meant to offend you. yeah teaching's pretty sweet. do you get paid or community hours?

they have teacher shortage?

Oh its ok, im not offended lol... no i dont get paid, no i dont get hours, no we dont have a shortage. I teach for fun + im more qualified than most they can find ? (maybe)

hmm.. what if u own a internet company that has 3000 customers making $$,$$$ per month. would that sort of help?

holy sheet (you know what i mean "ee"="ei"). how many employees?

about 10 people working full time... It's a business i started 3 years ago.. Been pretty successful and it's managed professionally now

PM me if you want to know the URL.. I don't want to disclose it publicly :)

how old are you...did youget your parent's help. sounds like an accomplishment, i guess

nah was just a hobby that sort of "worked"..
I'm just a regular person otherwise.. no one special.. But I do hope it helps me on the admission front

I'm 18

question for someone who updates "Where Am I " site. the dates you put in as receipt date or sent date, are they any accurate at all?

For incoming documents.. it's the date they process it..

I sent a fax to them with some documents and they put it up on the site 2 weeks later.. with a date 10 days after they received it

hey AcceptedtoCollegeAlready,
im just worried i wont get into any of the schools i applied to since my GPA is sooooo damn low... Do you think i should be able to get into at least one of the schools i applied to?
Also i had a grade change (had a really bad grade that was changed because it was wrong) at semester (a class i took in 10th grade) - hopefully my school sent the notification with midyear but is it worth it for me to call them or something to make sure they have the grade fix?

In your case, it seems everything is equal because you are VERY math and technical oriented. This raises your chances at SCS a lot and basically makes MCS/Tepper/CIT/SCS all slight reaches.

I think since you applied to all four though, your chances are quite good that you'll get into at least one.

I would regularly recommend that you DEFINITELY send in anything that would be beneficial with respect to your GPA. However, it may already be too late as they have about 80% of the decisions already figured out. I would call the office to see if it's too late to send in additional information. The grade change is definitely worth something, but the problem is whether it is in time.

Where else did you apply to and get in?

Oh, i'm in california so ive applied to:
UCB, UCI, UCSD, UCLA
and also
MIT (yea, but i just had to apply :P)

But decisions arnt out yet. I'm really only wanting to go to CMU for CS though since thats what i love to do. Im thinking my top choices right now are:
1. CMU
2. MIT (but suurree ill get in..)
3. UCI? (better for compsci)
4. ucb
5. ucla
6. ucsd

also i did send in some extra stuff to CMU: a good looking resume and i think a portfolio of websites i made.

Remember, even getting into one school is good because as long as you take the necessary classes, a transfer to Comp Sc is easy (even though adcoms won't tell you so as they don't want massive transfer applications).

Once you take CS-250?.. what its called, you are allowed to start filing for a transfer app and so far the people I know who have done it have gotten in.

Good luck and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
