Some Opinions Requested...

Hi everyone.

I got into Penn State (Schreyer's Honors College) and Pitt (Honors). I was wondering which school would be ideal for me to excel during medical school admissions and just a better fit. I am not a really good judge of where I would fit best, so could you please tell me where I should choose.

Location: (Pitt vs. University Park). I have been at UP but not Pitt. I feel like I am more of a city/town person, but I have lived in the suburbs most of my life. Penn State is pretty close to Philly and closer to my parents than Pitt. Pitt has Pittsburgh and somewhat close to Harrisburg.

Resources: Penn State Honors gives a lot of attention to its students. It has large university's resources. But so does Pitt. Pitt also has a much more notable and stronger medical facilities/program.

Of course this is just one medical school, but there are three students from Pitt from here, and zero from Penn State.

Money: Both are about the same, so money is not a key issue.

Side question: If you know, which college do you think is more collaborative and less cut-throat or in other words more relaxed?

If I missed any other factors, please let me know. But that is pretty much my dilemma. Please tell me what you think: where do you think I should go and why. Thank you.

EDIT: Oh and I am probably going to major and try to do some research in chemistry, biology, or biochemistry.

I wouldn’t worry about how many PSU or Pitt kids are at Vandy SOM. Many PA kids probably apply/go to PA med schools instate to save money. And, many probably don’t consider southern SOMs anyway.

I would pick PSU Shreyers. Period.

Thanks. I was leaning toward Penn State Schreyers, but Penn State is really known for more engineering/physics rather than medical/natural science programs, so that was kind of deterring me.

Visit Pitt before deciding…apples to oranges comparison…urban vs rural…college town that exists because of and all about PSU vs thriving (again) urban center where Pitt is but one of several schools (Duquesne and Carnegie Mellon most notably with a few more) in town.

Undergrad experience will be VERY different at each with PSU the more traditional RAH RAH, Greek life etc experience while Pitt will be a little less RAH RAH if you know what I mean.

You can’t go wrong with either but really need to see Pitt for yourself while classes are in session and not on a weekend before making a decision.

I have heard that Pitt is pretty cut throat, but this isn’t anything I know first hand so I wouldn’t put much weight in it.

I’m in PA and around here it’s generally thought that one goes to Pitt if one wants Pre-med and PSU if one wants Pre-Vet (or Engineering). The difference is that Pitt has all those hospitals right on or extremely near campus and PSU has the large animals and facilities.

If you’re more of a city person, I suspect you’d prefer Pitt anyway. Pitt is as Rah Rah for sports as PSU is - and there are pro teams in Pitt to root for too if you’re into that sort of thing.

Personally, I wouldn’t consider PSU anywhere close to Philly nor Pitt anywhere close to Harrisburg, but I suppose that depends upon how one defines close (for me it would be within 2 hours of a drive).

yeah i am in PA too. And people do go to Pitt for premed, but the Schreyers is pretty enticing as well.

I feel like I will go with Schreyers most probably since I found someone on the Penn State forum saying how some graduates got into Harvard, Penn, Columbia, and other pretty good medical schools. But I will be sure to visit Pitt before making my final decision.

Thanks everyone.
