I've gotten to the common app, and I am wondering whether or not I can put some stuff down without any trouble. I feel as though it is asking for an actual job with a company, something I haven't actually had.

-Tutoring. I tutored someone in AP Calculus 2 years ago and earned 15 dollars an hour around once or twice a week throughout the year. I'm not sure what to put down as the employer...should I put their name down? Or just leave it as N/A or blank?
-I'm in a quartet that performs for various occasions, and I've also been hired as a violinist for some groups when someone isn't available, like a substitute. Again, do I put down something like N/A for employer?

I also recently have created a little business where I arrange people who did well on the SAT to provide cheap test prep to interested students (I tutor as well). Made a website, advertised, facebook group etc. It isn't school affiliated, and I didn't want to have to go through the legal issues of making it an actual business, so it is just sort of there, unclassified. I'm not particularly sure where this goes either.

Thanks for your help!

I don’t think the colleges will care too much. Just “summarize” your 3 things into that one to two lines that the Common App gives you. Haha I wouldn’t put the person’s name down for the first one, that’d be a little odd

Could I put my SAT tutoring group as an activity? Or just leave it in employment. I suppose because it is paid, it should go into employment?

If you were paid it is employment

Really tout your creating a SAT tutoring business (advertising etc). That kind of passion and initiative is something that college value. Starting a business deserves a star on your application.

Okay thanks, I just need to summarize it into a few lines.

For the employer field, you could enter “freelance” or “self-employed.” I agree that the SAT tutoring thing should be interesting to admissions officers – definitely worth going into more detail somewhere, whether in an essay or the “additional information” section or somewhere else.

Thanks for the advice guys. I’m probably putting my tutoring business into additional activities and writing about tennis for my extracurricular essay. Would i go into more detail about how/why I made the program?
