Some questions about Northwestern from an incoming freshman

I’m excited to be attending Northwestern in the fall! I’m in Medill and will also choose a double major in Weinberg. I just had a few questions about the Northwestern academic experience:

1.) Is Northwestern more pre-professional or “intellectual” ? Do the students generally care more about a well-rounded, liberal arts based education or being prepared for a specific career. I personally value liberal arts based education more.

2.) Are the classes generally smaller, discussion-based? Are there seminar styles of classes?

3.) What are the most popular academic interests on campus?

4.) To current students/alums: what was/is your experience like? ANy recommendations to make the most of my time there?

As the father of 2 NU Alums, here’s my take:

  1. You get out of it what you put into it.
  2. Take advantage of freshman Get To Know You programs, and look to join clubs. Every first week, clubs try to attract new members, so talk to people in areas that interest you. This will extend your circle of friends - and expose you to people outside your dorm and classes. And of course, also, "FUN!"
  3. Join - and contribute - to study groups. Co-operative learning is big, and helpful in school - and later, career wise. This will also increase your circle of friends.
  4. Do something physical - good to get some frustrations out - and if you played sports in HS, you will be welcomed at the IM and/or club sports.
  5. Relax, and enjoy the ride! You were good enough to get into NU - you're good enough to be successful at anything and/or everything at NU!

Good Luck!
