So basically a 3.8+ means you're basically in at Berkeley and LA?

Would it be unwise to try and aim for the school of Haas at Berkeley? Should I just go under Economics? I plan to get an MBA.

There is never really a “guarantee,” only a very good chance. You should realize, however, that a 3.8 for an impacted major may not be as competitive as you think. Furthermore, a 3.8 is below the avg GPA for Haas/Biz Econ. This doesn’t mean you won’t get in, it just means you need to construct a solid app to have a solid chance.

I too plan to get an MBA, but I applied for Biz Econ/Econ at other UCs and privates. After comparing the graduate business school curriculum with the undergrad curriculum at Haas, I realized there was a lot of overlap. Furthermore, one must take Fin+Man accounting to be eligible for LA’s Biz Econ, Haas does not have this requirement. This means that if you want to be competitive for Biz Econ/Haas, and then you get into+choose to go to Haas, you end up repeating Fin+Man accounting.

Personally all of this put me off. I want to learn new things in my undergrad+grad years, and not pay thousands of dollars to repeat courses I have already taken. If you have a passion for Economics, I would definitely suggest applying for that instead of Haas. You can still get an MBA with a bachelors in Econ.

Just a side note, UCLA’s Biz Econ is not the “traditional” undergrad business curriculum. Many people on CC have colloquially defined it as “an Econ major with an accounting minor.” In reality, Cal is the only UC that offers a “business” major outside of a college of arts and sciences.

A 3.8 is just the average admissions for UCLA Business Economics majors and UC Berkeley Haas accepted applicants. There is no guarentee on admissions especially when it comes to UC Berkeley Haas, you need to rigorously fulfill the prereqs to even be eligible for application review. If you really want to go ahead and apply to UC Berkeley Haas then go right on ahead but I do advise you to fulfill the prereqs when it comes to selective majors in certain schools.

I also plan on going getting an MBA like my brothers have.
