Some questions about transferring

I'm an international student, finishing my BA in a few months. I'd love to do my master's degree in communications at NYU, but I can't meet their application deadline for the fall semester 2011. Due to financial reasons and some other things, I have to start with grad school by the end of 2011. So I thought about starting with my 2nd choice (HPU) and then transfer to NYU.

Except not being admitted to NYU, is there any problem I could come across? What are my chances? Is it very difficult to transfer in the US?

I have excellent letters of recommendation, good TOEFL results, great work and internship experience etc. But my GPA is only "B". (maybe 2.4. or 2.5). Do you think that could be a problem?
I need to take the GRE.
What do you think is most important to get accepted?

NYU told me, they can only accept up to 10 credit points. I'm not that familiar with the US system yet.. Are 10 CP a lot? How many CP do you need approximately for a master's degree?

THANKS SO MUCH, I really appreciate it your help!

10 credit points at NYU appears to be about 2 or 3 classes at most (at NYU, most of their graduate classes are 4 credits each).

I would think transferring into NYU would be about the same difficulty as it is to get into the NYU masters program in the first place. Doing very well in a few master level classes may be good for transfer, as your undergrad GPA is a bit underwhelming (2.5). However, I can only imagine that NYU masters program is not easy to get into – I am not familiar with their stats for admissions. You should dig around for these kinds of stats to get a better idea of your chances for admission.

Is HPU a good fit? Because if you start there and you don’t get into NYU, you may find that you need to finish your masters at HPU.

Thank you very much for your reply!

I’m sorry, I think I made a mistake with the GPA equivalents. I did some research and my GPA is 3.0 or 3.3 (depends on my thesis and two classes). Do you think that’ll be fine for NYU?

I’m interested in their Master of Arts degree in Media, Culture and Communication (Steinhardt). Does anyone know how hard it is to get in there?

And, by the way, how about CUNY? Is it a good school?

If anyone knows something about NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism institute, please let me know  Thanks so much in advance!
