Some questions about Tufts

I'm trying to make my decision as to where I should go to school & I have some questions about life at Tufts.

1.) I'm not 100% sure what field I want to become involved in. How hard/easy is it to switch majors?
2.) How's the "party scene"? Is drinking the only thing to do? Are there opportunities for students who don't want to drink?
3.) How present are the sororities/fraternities?
4.) Where would you say the majority of the people are from?
5.) Do students spend a lot of time in the city?
6.) Is the student body "cliquey"?
7.) What is the overall atmosphere of the school?

Sorry, I have a lot of questions. Answers to any of them would be greatly appreciated!

They censored it :(

Okay I’m all out of ideas. Google, Tufts student reviews which should lead you to some decent websites. cough*****cough

1.) I’m not 100% sure what field I want to become involved in. How hard/easy is it to switch majors?

Every student comes in undeclared, and you don’t have to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year! This allows you to check out different classes so you don’t have to make a commitment until you’re truly ready. Although you’re free to declare first semester freshman year if you want to! That being said, a LOT of freshmen here at Tufts are undecided. It’s a great place to figure out what you want to do.

2.) How’s the “party scene”? Is drinking the only thing to do? Are there opportunities for students who don’t want to drink?

The best way I can think to answer this is, I know a lot of people who drink, and a lot of people who don’t. You don’t have to drink or go out to have fun. There are always weekend events going on such as a capella shows, plays, speakers, comedy shows, and so much more! You will definitely find people here from both sides of the partying spectrum. I think that’s one of the really great things about Tufts.

3.) How present are the sororities/fraternities?

Around 13-15% of the undergrad population is involved in fraternities/sororities. They’re a nice presence on campus in terms of community service. They are always hosting different fundraisers like collecting old shoes for Haiti, and fun benefit events such as “Mr. Jumbo,” a silly male pageant which just took place in February. They’re cool for people who want to be involved, but by no means do they rule the school. I am in no way involved with the frat/sorority scene but a few of my close friends are pledging. That’s the thing - the typical “frat” or “sorority” girls aren’t really the Tufts population, I find that they’re a lot more laid back than other schools.

4.) Where would you say the majority of the people are from?

EVERYWHERE. It’s really cool - about 15% of our undergrad population is usually international. I have friends from China, Africa, California, New Jersey, Colorado… that being said, I feel like there are a lot of people from the New England and northeast area, and California.

5.) Do students spend a lot of time in the city?

That really depends. Some people go alot, some people barely go at all. It’s really accessible, only about 20min away from Boston and 10min away from Cambridge from our T stop in Davis Square. Last semester I only went into Boston four or five times, two of those to get to South Station to take the bus home. Some people go into the city a lot more. It really depends. There’s always so much going on around campus, though, I feel like people like to stay around because they are so involved in campus life. It’s nice to be able to get off campus though.

6.) Is the student body “cliquey”?

I don’t think so. I don’t feel that there are specifically defined groups here at Tufts. I mean, I guess you get that everywhere, but it’s no more noticeable than other groups. In my experience, the student body is SO friendly - one of the reasons I decided to come here - and that we aren’t confined to being friends with certain people just because they aren’t part of a specific “group.” I hope that was a good enough answer, clique questions are tough ones to answer.

7.) What is the overall atmosphere of the school?

This is a tough one too. I’ll just tell you a few different vibes I get. As I mentioned before, everyone is so friendly here. Also, it is non-competitive. After four years of high school trying to get the best GPA and be on top of our classes, we really, really, REALLY don’t want four more years of that. There’s a general sense of collaboration and cooperation and that is great. Also, I love that you can either go out on a Saturday night OR spend the night in the library with a bunch of other people. We like to chill and have fun, and play Bananagrams (my recently discovered favorite game ever!) but you’re not looked down upon if you decide to spend some time studying instead of hanging out. There’s a great balance of work and play.

I hope that was helpful!! If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m a tour guide here at Tufts so I’m used to talking to prospective students and parents!

Good luck with your search!

that was very helpful thank you! hopefully I will hear back soon…
