Some questions about UCF

I have 2 questions I'd like to ask others regarding UCF

1) What are my chances of getting in (see criteria below)?
2) How is their financial aid? I know they have the Pegasus Awards, but if you go there or are planning on attending, how much money do you receive? I'd probably get merit aid, since my FAFSA is going to look like we have more money than we do. (Because we have to declare my step-dad and dad's incomes, neither of which are going to give me money towards college..)

My "stats"----

Unweighted Academic GPA: 3.8 <-- What Facts.org says is my Core SUS GPA
Weighted: 4.24, but this includes non-academic classes like my fine arts credit
9th: 3 honors
10th: 4 honors
11th: 1 AP, 1 Dual Enrollment, 3 Honors
12th (planning on): 2 AP, 1 DE, 2 Honors

Class Rank (currently): 8/400 ish

EC:
Dance classes since I was 3. Tap, Hip-Hop and Modern while in HS.
School Clubs: National Honor Society, Unity Club, VP of SADD
Other Clubs: NOW, ACLU
Volunteered at: A church, Public Library, American Cancer Society, Newsletter for NOW, I'll do more over the summer for NHS
Work: Since June 2006, hired as bagger. Promoted to Cashier- Nov. 2007

Test Scores:
ACT: 27
SAT: 1080 for R/M (yeah, I did bad)

I'll be retaking each test, at least one more time. I need only 1 more point for 100% BF.

I'm looking at either Forensic Science or Clinical/Medical Lab Science. UCF has both of these programs, plus tons of other majors if I don't like either of them. I went to Open House in January and fell in love with the school. Of course, I'm applying to others as well. (Florida Gulf Coast, U of Tampa, and U of South Florida).

What do you guys think my chances are of getting in? And if you have opinions of their aid as well.. College Board shows that UCF doesn't give out very much money.. And I'd rather not graduate with $30,000+ in loans.

Thank you!

Don’t listen to college board in this situation. With your ACT score you should qualify for the Pegasus Bronze Scholarship ($8000 in all, $2000 a year). If you bring up your SAT or ACT then you will get 100% bright futures… so that $2000 a year will go towards housing and other fees. Trust me, you will not have $30,000 in loans. Depending on your EFC you may also qualify for grants, such as the Pell grant. And don’t forget about scholarships-- apply for every one, even if you think you have no chance. I have already applied for 20, and I am still not done.

It looks as if you are a junior, so you have plenty of time to boost your SAT and/or ACT. However, you should be able to get iaccepted with your ACT. Also, if your scores do go up you could qualify for the Pegasus Gold Scholarship ($10,000 in all, $2500 a year - every little bit counts). Take several practice tests and you should do fine. If you do not make the score this time, keep on trying until you get enough for Bright Futures.

Also, don’t forget to apply for the Honors College - they have scholarships too.

Good luck.

They hand a lot of that $$ out early. Later appliers - even with great stats - don’t always get the pegasus scholarship offers.

Knightforum: I’m pretty confident that I could bring up my ACTs up the one point. I think I can bring up my SATs, but not so sure about 100 points or so (if I wanted to get to the average “1200” at UCF)…

Since I don’t know much about the FAFSA, do you input the EFC or do they calculate it?
I’m not really interested in Honors at College. I know I could get into FGCU Honors. Honestly, I don’t want the courseload, thesis etc.

Mom: So, if I apply early (and have to accept it early), then I’ll get a lot of aid?

When you apply, submit only your ACT and not your SAT scores. They will probably be on your HS transcript, but don’t bother to have an official SAT score sent. You want them to focus on your ACT scores.

When you file for your FAFSA next year they will tell you your EFC.

The Burnett Honors College is just like regular classes but they are just smaller, which makes it easier to ask questions and understand the material. It really is just for recognition. You just take your Gen Ed classes with them, then you take your classes within your major with everyone else… non-honors.

When did you apply dance2nite296?? Or by the sound of the what you said you’re a junior, correct? You should just make sure you apply early, I applied to UCF in December and was accepted and given the Gold Pesagus scholarship but I suggest you apply earlier to be safe and have a good chance of receiving scholarship money. You will still be able to have options because the Pegasus scholarship (deadline to accept is normaly in Feb.) can be extened for you all the way until May, so you would not have to accept right away.

I agree… apply early. I applied at the beginning of October, and I received an acceptance on October 14.

My mom had me submit my SAT scores to 5 or 6 colleges when I took it last year, including UCF.

About the Honors College: I’m just worried about the thesis. Not to mention I don’t have the scores to get in. Plus, I’d probably have to re-take my DE Credits for Honors Credit

Marlins: Yeah, since I’m a Junior, I haven’t applied yet. Do you know the date when UCF apps open for the 2010 year? UCF is my #1, so I’ll worry about getting my app in there first.

You will have a thesis in regular english classes as well-- so you will have to worry about one either way. As for the scores, you said you will be retaking both tests anyways. Also, don’t worry about the bad scores that you sent in… they only consider your highest scores. I don’t think you would have to retake the classes that you already have credit for… I would email the honors college to double check though.

I am pretty sure that applications open in July or August… but I would hold off on sending in your application until you have all your letters of recommendation and good enough test scores. As long as it is before November then you should be fine.

If I’ve already taken English Comp 1 & 2, I would still have to do a thesis? Hmm. If this is the case, I may consider Honors.

I wasn’t planning on applying over the summer, due to letters of recommendation etc. Thank you!

dance2nite926: UCF starts accepting applications as early as July or August. My son worked on his essays over the summer, sents his ACT/SAT scores, was finished with his application before school started in August. His high school sent his transcripts the last week of August and he was accepted the first week of September. He received a Pegasus award within a month of acceptance. It was such a relief to have all that behind him early in the school year. Only problem is that senioritis sets in much sooner!!
