some questions for uc merced students

Let me start off by saying a few words about myself. Im a transfer student from orange county. I actually had a good gpa but I messed up one semester before transfering and ended up failing 2 classes so my gpa became a 2.9(if it was a 3.0 my tag would have been accepted) :-/
Anyway, out of the UCs that I applied for I only got accepted into uc merced. I'm planning to live on campus. I just wanted to know how is the overall life of UC merced students?
How would u rate the overall educational experience in uc merced from 0 to 10?
Is it fun to live on campus?
Do UCM students party a lot or they usually get bored?
What are common activities out there when ur not in class or in the library?
Do a lot of people leave the dorms on weekends?
Are ucm students cool and welcoming? Is it easy to make a good number of friends there?
Is it cool to have a guest staying over at ur appartment like for the weekend? (Not every weekend obviously, esp. If ur in the double rooms?)
And last but not least how would u comment about the members of the opp. sex in uc merced? In other words, is there a good number of nice looking people out there in UCM?
I actually think these would be some common questions for any new students at ucm, thank u in advance for the time u spend reading my post!

I’m from OC also, and life at UCM is really what you make of it. It’s definitely different then OC since there’s like nothing here in comparison.

I can’t compare UCM to anywhere else since I’ve never attended anywhere else. You’ll always have your good professors and bad professors no matter where you go though.

It’s not like if you live on campus you can’t go off campus (or the other way around). On campus gives you the opportunity to interact more with people though since you’re still on campus. Where-as off campus people tend to go to class and then go home.
It’s a lot more convenient if you have a friend on campus that’s a 1 minute walk away from you vs. having to drive. (And just because you live on campus doesn’t mean you can’t be super isolated - go to class and go straight back to your room)

If you party, you go to parties… if you don’t, you don’t.

Common activities include watching cows and watching grass grow. But seriously, it’s what you make of it. Hang out with people. You’re not going to have fun going to the mall yourself (especially since it’s ridiculously small) but you’ll have fun being around your friends (assuming you have good friends). Find stuff to do and you won’t be bored. Other schools will have more stuff to do since they’re bigger. If you don’t like it, either suck it up or go somewhere else. I keep myself entertained by hanging out with friends and attending the events that clubs host (youtube.com/UCMercedLife).

Yes, a lot of people leave on the weekends. A lot of people will leave in the beginning of the year (homesick etc.) but more and more people will start to stay on campus as the year progresses (but there are still a lot of people gone).

It depends on the people. Every year there are new / more students so it depends how nice they are. (There will always be jerks and there will always be nice people, that’s just the human population for you).

There’s technically a policy where all your roommates have to agree for you to have a guest overnight and they can only be over for a couple days or something. But no one really does that and it’s just if your roommates are cool with it or not.

The more people there are, the more fish there are in the sea.
EXAMPLE: Let’s say people that are good looking are 20% of the population. If UCLA has like 40,000 students, there will technically be more good looking people than UCM if there are only 4,000 students.
(Cheezy - beauty is in the eye of the beholder)

So in summary, if you look at all these Q/A’s, it all depends on the PEOPLE a.k.a. YOU. :P

Thanks for ur answers… they were pretty useful for me. And I just saw ucm today for the first time and I do tend to like it

Like someone said above, life at UC Merced is what you make of it. I found good life-lasting friends within the first WEEK due to my floor and my roommates. We have fun. Yeah the town’s really small, but fun lies in the small things. Like in the movie nights, campus events, the parties and sneaking into the lake. There’s even an abandoned barn to explore in the restricted part of campus and the “haunted” lighthouse. You just have to look.

The education I would rate at an 8. I’ve been pleased so far. The professors are readily available most times. If you’re doing bad, it’s kind of your own fault.

It is incredible fun on campus. Having nothing to do usually lends itself to socializing and interacting with your fellow peers :)

I partied a lot freshman year. Most of the people I knew at least went a few times. Then again, one of my roommates never went to a party and still generally enjoyed the school. Some of my most exhilarating nights of freshman year were ON campus NOT partying. So you don’t have to party, but it is pretty fun.

Common activities include (but are not limited to): partying, going to the movies, going to town for shopping/fairs, exploring downtown, movie nights on campus, going to the lake for swimming during the day/exploring its bounds, breaking into the lake area at night to watch the stars, trekking about a half-mile to the abandoned barn at night, game night, hanging out in the lounges, socializing in people’s rooms, walking around campus at night, DC runs, late-night Taco Bell/In-N-Out runs, drinking in dorms (if you’re into that sort of thing), playing volleyball and basketball with friends, going to the gym.

A lot of people leave the dorms the first few weeks, but as time progresses and students become accustomed, everyone gets around to staying.

I think that at every college it is easy to make friends especially if you’re outgoing and open. Same goes for Merced. Like I’ve said before, I’ve made life-long friends here.

You can have guests in the dorms with written permission of your roommates and suitemates, but most people just bring guests and tell their roommates/suitemates that he or she is coming. No one really checks up on those things. Just don’t get in trouble.

The boys here are ehhhh. The girls are way prettier haha.

Thanks for the answers, very helpful …
U guys changed my views about UCM, now I’m even kinda excited to go there… :D

Hey cool, I’m in OC too!

Thanks for these answers!
