Some random questions I got as I was flipping through the packet of stuff we got (I know late; I procrastinated on reading through it).

-Essentially first year MIT, we are taking clac, physics, bio/chem, and advising seminar or a humanities (HAS-D? er sorry I'm not MIT fluent yet) class? And we figure out our classes after we get our advisors?

-Is Terrascope and Mission 2009 seminars worth it?

-I was confused on the wording of the RBA bit? Are all the people in McCormick and Next required to do RBA?

-Also, what exactly is the difference between AP credit and the placement testing. Ex. I got a 5 on AP Bio, so do I auto. get credit for that? And the placement test is for if you want to go to a higher level. Ex. say that I want to go ahead one level in bio, would I need to take the placement test in addition to sending my AP score?

-Do you reccommend attempting to take the placement testing for chem? (I heard that it was really hard.)

-Lastly, what is the inside scope on the advising seminars and traditional advising?

Thanks very much! And sorry for the many questions!

mission/terrascope is fantastic if you're into environmental science stuff. People I know in it loved it, and you get to go on a trip to some cool place for spring break (like the Galapagos this year).
and I would recommend an advising seminar :-)

AP credit is accepted for some classes but not others. It is accepted for biology, so if you got a 5 on the bio AP test, you don't have to take 7.01whatever.

Some departments don't accept AP credit as a valid substitute for taking their courses. The chem department is, of course, the most prominent example... you're right, not many people pass the chemistry advanced standing exam. If you feel like you're very well-prepared in chemistry, take the test. If not... sleep in and just take 3.091/5.111/5.112 like everybody else.

My sister did Mission 2009 and Terrescope this past year and loved it. She says it's the best program (though she may be somewhat biased) and that you don't have to be thinking about environmental engineering to do it.

I'll be a freshman in the fall and I also have some questions of my own:
Does anyone know anything about FASAP?
I'm interested in the visual arts and play clarinet and want to continue these things, but I think I'd rather pursue physics or some kind of engineering as a major. Are the advisors good -- will they know about classes/opportunities in other departments? Also, my sister liked Terrescope so much because it created a little community where she made a lot of friends; would FASAP be like that, too?
What about ESG?

Oops, sorry, didn't mean to take over this thread.

i was in fasap, and by strange (not really) coincedence so were a number of other frosh from my dorm...i made friends with a lot of people there, but i'm not sure we wouldn't've been friends if we hadn't been in the seminar together. esg, tho i wasn't in it as a frosh, appears to have a pretty cohesive group culture, there's always study groups up there tackling the pset, and having upperclassmen TAs helps too (i took a p/f seminar up there this term, and have friends who were in it and now TA/are still involved) so if that's the sort of thing you're looking for, consider esg.

i found fasap the most valuable b/c it was something that wasn't my academic classes, it was about art and gave me tickets and encouraged me to go see shows and exhibits and do activities i wouldn't've kept pursuing on my own, ntm all the free food. if i'd been more uncertain about which classes to take then perhaps i would've been irritated that the advisors aren't necessarily thoroughly informed about what the offerings are, but you only need a little bit of initiative to fix that. you have three years to have a serious (ish) advisor in your major; having one your freshman year when you're still taking girs and exploring random things that look interesting probably isn't going to hurt you much, if at all.

no prob tomato

I was wondering is FASIP worth it?
