I am going to attend a college in the state of Florida this fall of 2009. I have been thinking about a major in engineering and I am thinking about primarily Computer Engineering or Mechanical. I am also giving some thought to Electrical. The two universities that I have in mind are University of Florida (pending decision) and University of Central Florida (accepted and scholarship offered); both are highly prestigious from what I have heard.

First of all, out of the above three majors, which one, in your opinion is the best in terms of job scope, salary, etc. in the coming years? I have heard computer engineering and electrical are some of the top majors. Mechanical is decent as well.

Secondly, for computer engineering, there are two options: software and hardware. So, I want to know which one is better or if I can do them both, or if specializing in one of them would be better than fusing them.

Thank you all for your advice in advance,

Computer engineering is going to give you equal hardware and software knowledge. At my school CompE's do all the circuit theory that EE's do, digital logic circuits, dynamic systems, control systems, signal processing, and electronics/computer interfacing. Other topics include software engineering, embedded systems software and design, computer architecture, data structures, operating systems, computer graphics, and networking. Not to mention a full year of program electives which can be either hardware or software classes.

EE will share many things with CompE but instead of advanced computer science topics, EE's go into power, electromechanical conversion, electromagnetic waves, signal processing, and other advanced EE topics. An EE major can do a better job explaining this.

ME is very different from them both. I'll let someone who majored in ME to explain that to you though.

Job aspects for a CompE are very good due to the boom in software engineering and the fact you can enter so many different computer jobs.

EE and ME are broad majors and therefore will allow you to get into many many different fields. Your prospects here is very good as well. All engineering majors will serve you well for finding a job.

thank you for that website and your insight...I appreciate it.
Keep it coming guys :)
