Some Questions regarding Under-Graduate admission at Davis..Please HELP!

Hi ,

I migrated to the United States almost 2 years ago and I started my High School here from 11th grade (Junior Year). I did all my A-G requirements pretty quickly and got pretty good grade in all of my classes (mostly A’s). I applied to Davis and I got accepted…so that part is good.

The problem is that I have few fears/questions regarding my future at UCD as an undergraduate student , who will be the first one to go to any American University from his family…

1- O.K so I didn’t pass my AWPE and I’ll be taking workload57 (since my SAT scores were good enough , I don’t need to take linguistic class etc). The problem is that I am a bit upset that I didn’t pass AWPE. All my English teachers used to praise me that my English was exceptionally good since I was a recent immigrant to the United States (From Pakistan :D) but was getting A’s in my regular English classes. Now that I have failed AWPE , I feel that I would be wayyyy behind in English than other students at Davis. So is failing AWPE unusual or something very bad? Remember , I am not a native English speaker …

2- My major is Aerospace Science and Engineering but the problem is that I didn’t take any Calculus class at highschool. I just didn’t have the time to take it. Even though I took a Math class EVERY semester during my High School , I couldn’t make it into Calculus ( I just had almost 1.5 years to complete my highschool). The highest Math class I took was “Pre-Calculus” , that I completed in my last semester of highschool. I think that almost ALL students with engineering major at Davis will have taken atleast one Calculus class in their highschool. So is this the case? Would it be very difficult for me to go to an Engineering major without having taken Calculus at High School?

3- Are students signing up for classes online? Or we will sign up for classes at Orientation? I didn’t sign up for any class yet and I am going to Orientation on 8th August… So can anybody tell me whats the case here?

I’ll be very grateful , if you answer my questions…

Thanks!

I can’t answer the first two questions, but for #3, incoming freshmen and transfer students sign up for fall classes during orientation, while current students had their Pass 1 registration date back in May. Incoming freshmen and transfers who don’t want to go to orientation have to wait until Pass 2 or until Pass 1 Open Registration, which is in August, to sign up online, I believe.

For AWPE, don’t worry about it. Just take the class and you’ll be done! Lots of people need to take it. You won’t be ‘behind in english’. Especially since you’re an
engineering student, this might be the only english class you take.
Most of the engineering students probably took some calculus in high school. But I am one who didn’t - so don’t worry about it either. Just start with the 21A. If they took it in high school, they either 1) skipped the 21A or 21B if they passed the AP test, or 2) started with the 21A anyway and it was probably pretty easy for them. But assuming you are good at math if you are going into engineering, you shouldn’t have problems with it.
and like the other person said, you will sign up for classes during orientation. But check online or watch your emails… I had to take the math placement test online before orientation. And took the chem placement test during orientation. You may want to search the website and look over the practice tests.

First of all, your english is very good so don’t worry about not passing the test. Anyways, like the other person said, you’ll probably only have to take one or two classes at the most for your major. Regarding your pre-calc situation, i don’t think its a requirement that you had to take calc in order to major in engineering. I’m majoring in bio and i just took pre- calc in high school too, so don’t worry!
