Some Questions That Have Been Nagging Me

I know the UC's only consider junior and sophomore years. Unfortunately, I have 2 B's. My 20 other grades are all A's and my UC gpa is a 4.25, but how badly would those 2 B's hurt me for admission? Also, does UCLA not consider rank at all? A friend and I are both going to apply. He's gong to have a better UC gpa than me, but I'm higher ranked than him because of my overall academic performance (freshman year and some other factors). Because of that, I've been worried about how them not considering rank will hurt me. Also, I know that I don't count senior year grades, but don't I give myself up to the 8 extra points for honor courses taken including senior year? The UC site said I"f you have taken any approved honors, AP, college, or IB classes in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grades, then enter the count of honors course grades you have earned that are C or better.". I'm going to have 6-7 AP classes taken in those 3 grades, but people here have been telling me that senior year AP classes don't count.

Your 2 B’s shouldn’t affect you at all, I believe UCLA also considers class rank, and you have a respectable GPA. Stop panicking. Just get a high SAT score and you’re good to go.

This sets thread a new standard for obsessive overachievement.

UCLA won’t see your transcript (and thus class rank) until after you’re accepted.

The only reason UCLA would consider class rank is if you’re in ELC (top 4% of your class).

My SAT score is a 2250, and what do you mean they won’t see my transcript until I’m accepted? Isn’t the transcript necessary for admissions?

I thought UCLA asks you to declare your class rank on your UC application the same way you self-report your grades. Of course, it may perhaps be my fuzzy memory.

Alright, so are there any other answers to the original questions? Also, my extracurriculars are bad, so should I retake the 2250 to somewhat make up for them?

A higher SAT score won’t really make up for ECs at UCLA. I hear it works for Berkeley, though.

Uh…another 50 points on the SAT isn’t going to help offset a gaping void where ECs are. Your academics don’t mean squat if you don’t have any actual experiences to show for them.

Well, I don’t necessarily have a gaping void for ecs. It’s just that they aren’t really amazing.

I just know that these ec’s don’t match up to kids here at all.

Also, I might be founding my school’s chapter of Spanish honor society, so I could list myself a co-founder (along with my friend) for that and maybe get a leadership position in it. My school’s fairly new, so we took the initiative to get it set up because of our interest in Spanish.

I know my ec’s are nothing compared to the people here, and I’m assuming that the applicants are all like the people here. So, a higher SAT wouldn’t help with this at all?

Your extracurriculars are excellent. Relax. UCLA will probably end up your “backup” school, anyways.

I got into UCLA with 2 Bs in Calculus AB AP. My UC GPA was 4.27. You’ll be fine. I got into UCLA with a double-digit class rank (out of 615 students), whereas some of my single-digit class rank friends got rejected from UCLA and Berkeley (I got into both). Work on your ECs. Oh, and my SAT was roughly 200 less than yours.

UC doesn’t really look at your class rank. You do not report it. Your high school, however, may submit your transcripts to UC so it can calculate your class rank and place you in ELC if appropriate. Your senior AP classes will be looked at with respect to the rigor of your senior class schedule.

Transcripts are not necessary for applying; they are required after admittance, statement of intent to register, and graduation from high school.

Ah alright.

Your location says Texas so I assume that means you live in Texas. ELC (top 4%) is only for California.

Oh k. So rank isn’t really relevant for ucs then.

You’re good to go. UCLA does not see your transcript, and thus your rank until after they accept you. My stats were similar to yours, but I was in the 75th percentile in my graduating class of 700.

I got a C in AP Chem first semester junior year and a couple of B’s, more than 2 I’m pretty sure, over the years. Still a pretty high GPA/rank, but yeah I got in. Plus it’s not all based on academics :P
