How is UCB for English? I literally know nothing about the school, but someone recommended that I apply, so I'm trying to learn. I also cross-posted this in the UCLA forum. Sorry, I know these are terribly annoying.

Some (very, very) basic stats:

GPA: 3.83 UW, 4.43 W

SAT 2200 (800 CR, 780 W, 620 M)
SAT II's (retaking) (760 lit, 700 us history)
ACT 32 (36 reading, 35 english, 29 math, 29 science)

AP's: Lit, Lang&Comp, US History (all 5's)

EC's:
Debate (top team in the state, quarterfinalists at debate nationals)
Forensics (semifinals at nationals, 5th at state, top 3 at numerous local tournaments)
Editor in chief of award-winning school newspaper
Class president (10, 11, 12)
Part of one of the top treble choirs in the state (we do national/international tours and perform at a lot of conventions)

In addition, I will be at least national merit commended and probably semifinalist. I've got plenty more ECs but I won't bore you -- I just wanted to know if this is within my range.

Berkeley is an excellent school for English. And I think it's definitely within your reach--- your stats are wonderful, way, WAY better than mine, and I'm an incoming freshman. Good luck!

WELL. I didn't have as high a GPA or SAT scores as you and I also wrote down a bunch of my extracurriculars like making it to State and semi-ing there. I didn't have as many great rankings as you and I still got into Cal. haha....I took 2nd in the state in interp my senior year....too bad I never got to write that down in my application but what does it matter now? :)

Berkeley's English department is definetly at the top. It's particularly strong in 20th century English and American literature, feminist criticism, and medieval British literature.

Berkeley is a good school for you and i know for grad school we are number 1, so i can imagine we are in the top 5 for undergrad. But one question, are you out of state?

adamboy87, I can't agree with your logic in #7. jegan3, adamboy87 is right in that being out of state makes very probably makes it harder for you to get accepted, but it is still possible. One thing is for sure- if you do not apply, you will not get in no matter what. Best of luck.
