Some questions.

How is the film program handled? How is the dorm life? Which dorms are best and worst? How is Pittsburgh? I have never been there. What are some strange not everyone may know about Pitt? What are the best and worst things?

I can answer the question about Pittsburgh! :D
I live there and honestly, it's a pretty cool town. It's not glamorous or well-equiped as NYC (with the metro and hotshot stuff), but still...it's an aamzing place with lots to do!!
There's kennywood (a great amusement park), primanti with pittsburgh's FAVORITE and most delicious sandwiches, the three rivers, lots of museums, art galleries, ballets, orchestra, etc. It's a really cool town.

if your still looking for more, ther'es a GREAT list of what to do in pittsburgh on this thread; http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=286743

Hey there, troubleinabox!

Film program- The film program is run really well. Pitt has top-of-the-line equipment, and they also have their own TV channel that airs on all university TVs, including those hooked up in the dorms. They get guest lecturers and teachers from all areas of Pittsburgh media.

Dorms- Dorm life is typical of all colleges. The Towers, where most freshmen stay, were recently renovated. They are all carpeted with air conditioning, and a lounge on every third with with a big-screen TV. There are many different special living options, such as business, engineering, and honors housing.

Pittsburgh- Pittsburgh is a great city. nikkigirl12 put it well, it's not New York, but there's still a ton of stuff to do. Pittsburgh is made up of many different neighborhoods, and each has its own personality.

Strange things- Pittsburghers have their own dialect known as "Pittsburghese." Look it up and learn it. Primanti Brothers, which nikkigirl also mentioned, is a Pittsburgh staple. Their sanwiches include french fries and coleslaw.

Best- The culture. Pittsburgh is one of the most cultural cities in the country.
Worst- Parking!

The film program at Pitt has a very impressive faculty and attracts top film scholars from all over to lecture there. You must go and visit the UPItt campus and decide for yourself if it's for you. There are plenty of places to shop and eat all around UPitt, and it's in a very nice area of Pittsburgh called Oakland. It is a pleasant urban campus - not a rural campus in the middle of nowhere.

When is the best time to apply?

I'd suggest as soon as the applications come out. Contact OAFA on this. UPitt has rolling admissions.

Yeah, the sooner the better. With rolling admissions, you can apply at any time, but its easier to get in if you apply early.

Hi there,

I'll be a summer student at UPitt this year. Does anyone know about the Litchfield Towers dorms? I heard I'll be in the kind where each student has her/his own room (maybe Tower C?), but I don't know what to expect in terms of bathroom/shower facilities, etc. Can anyone tell me more? Thanks!

if you stay in campus housing for the summer, you'll be in Tower C. they are all singles, and there are showers/bathrooms on each floor for everyone. if you have the meal plan, too, you can go right downstairs to Market Central. there is also really good food in the cathedral cafe, which is in the basement of the cathedral (anyone can eat there, they accept cash, credit cards, panther funds & dining dollars).

i'm actually here for the summer too, but i'm living off campus. if you or anyone else has questions, let me know!

Thanks, Ocean Girl! Just knowing the rooms are singles and the bathrooms/showers are public--all good info. (Time to get shower shoes!)

I heard the meal plan will not be available for summer, there will be no refrigerators in the dorm rooms, and no cooking is allowed in dorms!! So I guess the Cathedral Cafe is my only option? Are there any grocery stores nearby?

Also, is the dorm all wi-fi ready?

Thanks--SummerStudent

My daughter hasn't found a grocery store nearby, but you can buy milk, oj and snacks at the local drugstore. Also, there are lots of takeout options on Forbes Avenue that are pretty reasonable, so you won't go hungry.

you can hop on the 71A and go to the Giant Eagle at Centre and Negley. If you walk further down Centre from the GE there's a WholeFoods and a Trader Joes.

there is also a giant eagle in squirrel hill...take anything going down forbes that says "squirrel hill" and get off at forbes & murray. its a few blocks down to the right; quite convenient.

you can buy your own mini-fridge at target down at the waterfront if you need one, although you'll need a car to get it back.

your best take-out options are sushi boat (cheap delicious sushi, fried rice bowls, soup, etc.) on oakland ave between forbes & 5th, brueggers bagels (they have great sandwiches & soups), and red oak cafe, which has wonderful organic options (both on forbes). There is also the Union Grill which is yummy and not too pricy, kiva han coffee house, and LuLu's asian restaurant which i've heard great things about (all on craig street).

You can definitely get staples and snacks at Rite-Aid & CVS, too.

all this pitt talk is making me more and more excited by the day XD

Where is Rite Aid? I thought CVS was the only close pharmacy.

I think it is on Forbes Avenue.

rite-aid is on the corner of forbes & atwood, way closer than cvs. i've never gone to cvs once.

CVS is a little nicer, but Rite-Aide is two or three blocks closer to most of campus. A kid on my floor didn't even know there was a CVS until near the end of freshman year.

Guys, thanks soooo very much. I was a little worried, but all your suggestions help a lot--especially for an out-of-towner! I love that Whole Foods and Trader Joes are within range!

Best wishes for all your summer plans. Pittsburgh, here I come!

Glad to see your excitment, summerstudent. We look forward to welcoming you
