Some Questions

I've narrowed down to a list of Cal schools I'm applying to:
CSU: Fresno
UC: Davis
Cal Poly Pomona

I don't have much faith in getting into Davis.... but anyway, for all of them, though things may vary I was wondering what classes were considered general ed and would transfer and what not.

Also for the core requirements of critical thinking, public speaking, english comp., and math what qualifies for critical thinking and english comp? I have taken AP Lit and have taken a writing course, which satisfies my current school requirements, not sure if I've met the "critical thinking" one though...?

I've been trying to communicate with counselors from Pomona and it seems as if they never handle questions from out of staters.

Any help will be appreciated. I will have more than 60 credits completed, hopefully around 84, but I have no idea how many of them are transferable. Is this something only the counselors will tell me? They just frustrate me so much.

Just curious, why Fresno. ;)

California Community College students use Welcome to ASSIST to plan their transfers to both UC and CSU (Cal Poly is a CSU). It might help you a little bit, at least to see what the requirements are. One document to look at is the IGETC, which is the requirement agreement between CCC and UC (CSU prospective students can use it too). However, if you are going into a science major, depending on which major it is, IGETC might not work well. I would say start with that and then call each school to see if they can give you some assistance. In general, the GE requirements will be the same for Fresno and Cal Poly, but the major pre-reqs might not be. UC will have basically the same types of requirements, although they require a different critical thinking class and not speech, and some of the CSU transferable classes are not UC transferable.

You can probably also get an idea of major pre-requirements on each university's web page for the particular major(s) you are interested in.

Thanks. :)

And both Fresno and Pomona have the animal health major that I want.

I've tried using that program, but don't find it to be very helpful.

Ah, I was wondering if it was something to do with agriculture or another science.

Anyway, Assist may not be completely helpful for you since you are not coming from a CA community college, but I think it could help in some ways. For instance, their Explore Majors pages could give you some insight as to what the majors at each school entail and the requirements for them.

One thing you can do is just pick a CCC, such as CCSF (City College of San Francisco) and see which courses at that CCC transfer to the university you are looking into. That might give you an idea of what the UCs and CSUs are asking for, no? CCSF has a great website, you could visit it and read their class descriptions to see what is meant by English 1C "advanced composition" - one of the recommended critical thinking classes for UC IGETC. It might take a bit more work on your part, but transferring is work for everyone.

Here is the IGETC course list for CCSF:
