I'm a freshman this year and I was wondering what people know about the greek life at nyu? I was thinking of joining a sorority in the spring and I was looking for some advice on whether or not rushing in the middle of a year was a good idea. And what a basic gist of all the different sororities might be. I've checked out the websites but am unable to tell just by pictures and words. If anyone knows anything about what the different sororities do (business, community service, etc) or what kinds of girls/reputations each sorority has that would be really helpful. And I'm under the impression that all the fraternities and sororities are "Jewish or Asian" and I wanted to know if this was true and whether or not it would be worth it to rush and join one. I'm looking for a better sense of community/sisterhood, to make new friends, network, and just get that experience. So if anyone has advice in this area that would be great!

Also I was thinking of getting a job spring semester of my freshman year. My parents greatly advice against it and I have upperclassmen friends who also dont think its a good idea, but I'm going to be 18 and I've never worked before and I think its about time I start. So any advice on second semester sophomore year; joining clubs, sorority, and a job? Anyone think this might be too much to handle?

Hey Julia,

I am a freshman who rushed fall semester and it was the absolute best decision I could have made. I love all of the girls who I have met in the past few months and we have grown to be very close in such a short amount of time and we always have a great time together!

I think you have nothing to lose by going to spring recruitment-there’s no obligation to finish recruitment. The best way to get a sense of each organization is really to just go through recruitment and meet the girls. You’ll really get a sense of what each organization is all about that way and see which one fits best for you. All of the sororities do philanthropy and have social events.

Not all of the frats/sororities are Jewish or Asian…most of them have a diverse group of members. AEPhi is historically Jewish but there are many non-Jewish girls too.

When you first join a sorority it will be a big time commitment, but there were a few girls in my pledge class who also had jobs, and we all kept up with our schoolwork.

My advice is to give it a shot-you have nothing to lose and so much to gain. One thing to keep in mind though is that some sororities may not do spring rush.

Thank you very much for the advice that was very helpful!

I was wondering though if you know which sororities do spring rush? I’ve been told that none of the sororities do it. And what sorority youre in if you dont mind me asking.
