Some reflections

AS a parent of a son who got into RICE engineering and Michigan Engineering ($45,000 scholarship) coming from Los Angeles, what would be a better choice? He also got into UCSD physics and UCSB so far.

He is not a huge partier and he is very excited about RICE and enjoyed visiting the school. One of the top faculty at RICE engineering did say that they are increasing enrollment and not keeping up with increasing the faculty. We are jewish and it appears not to be very many Jewish kids at RICE although I see there is a hillel. More of a concern for mom.

As well, what about connections after graduation. Do large companies even know RICE?
Thanks for your input. Waiting to hear from Dartmouth, Harvey Mudd, Stanford, Harvard and Brown.

zachman - what is the financial situation? A full ride to Michigan is a good deal, especially if Rice is not financially comfortable.

The Rice degree carries a lot of prestige, but it is slightly more localized than say, MIT. It gives you a huge leg up in the Houston/TX area when it comes to job hunting. Big Oil and consulting companies (I work at one now) hire a lot of our grads.

What engineering does your son plan to pursue? This will make answering your questions in detail a lot easier.
