some shameless advertising: nine reasons to go to welcome week

this is for all the new students. . .

1) it's right on campus. you don't have to go far to have fun.

2) it's the cool way to learn about NYU and NYC

3) you'll have something to make fun of later in your dorms (so even if the event sucks, you still have something to talk about)

4) transfer students: get to know other transfers (COUGH COUGH GO TO TRANSFER STUDENT SERVICES TABLE IN KIMMEL)

5) meet people! yeah, those "social" events might sound lame, but it's an easy way to meet people

6) diverse, cool events (last year we had karaoke, food tours, comedy night, drag queen bingo, and even a production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.)

7) it's the best way to transition from summer to college, and a perfect way to relax before school starts

8) IT'S ABSOLUTELY FREE!

9) you'll be making memories that you'll talk about years later. i know upperclassmen who still crack up over things that happened at their freshmen Welcome Week.

i'm going to Welcome Week training next week and i'll be working check-in the morning of the official move in, August 30th. if you see an over-enthusiastic and perky girl with pink Converse and a silver bow in her hair, it'll probably be me. ha.

i'm getting psyched up for Welcome Week. i don't have the full list of events, but i'm getting the emails about training. people are putting a TON of work into welcome week. it's shaping up to be really good!

yay Welcome Week!

Some of the events I saw looked really interesting. Definitely going.

Beach ball, RHPS, $5 double decker bus tour, party at bed bath and beyond (LOeffingL, that just had to be said),Goldman sachs reps, free t-shirt, and we sternies get to go to the us open? Amazing already. Can you recommend any must-see type things? At least, if stuff they usually have since you don’t know all the events yet (even though we do) lol

beach ball, if just for the free food and hanging out

comedy night and the improv comedy night (last year’s comedy night was sooooooo good)

broke student’s guide to NYC (seriously, there were some good tips there.)

RHPS

that’s all i can think of for now.

hm, i should check the schedule on the SRC website. i didn’t think to check there. i don’t have my shift assignments yet, ugh.

Wasn’t there a great concert/show last year too?

i love last years concert show too…

I thought welcome week was pretty painful when I went. You might as well go though if you’re not the adventurous type that wants to explore on their own.

I have a question. The site says you’re not officially registered for anything by making a schedule, so it’s totally okay if you have something on your calender and then decide to skip right? Knowing me I’ll sign up for a lot of stuff just to fill up my schedule and then not want to go to half of it, so I was wondering if there’s any way they’d frown upon skipping.

Also, is there any problem getting into the stuff that’s bound to be a little more popular (the comedy show or the karaoke for example)? Just wondering since the website says to arrive early since nothing’s guaranteed.

Just a couple of questions, thanks for the info!

I heard the hypnosis thing was pretty sick. I’m still kicking myself for missing it.

Any other recommendations? I just went through the list and signed up for anything that sounded mildly interesting so my schedule is all sorts of wack. As far as I can tell signing up just makes a calendar for you, it’s on you to get there on time for a spot, right?

@jdp

yeah, welcome week might not be for everyone, but i’m just saying there’s at least one or two events that people might want to check out. it still leaves tons of time to go to museums, go shopping, take that tour, etc. there are day events as well, so if you want to go out to clubs or whatever, you’re free to do that too.

yeah, you’re not officially registered for anything. it’s just making a schedule FOR YOU. they won’t know if you skip or not. i bet a lot of those things are for us, the WWL, so we can estimate how many people are coming. a lot of events are FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE so for the popular night events, be sure to get there early.

All right well I added most of the big events. Might sound stupid but I’m kind of excited to see the comedy shows, the hypnosis (always wanted to see one, we had one at school but in 4 years I never made it :), I think there was some gameshow or something, heh.

Always enjoy and learn something from your posts. Any idea what Labor Day Weekend will be like? My S (soph transfer to your program) will be moving in on 8/30 and do all the WW stuff, but will LD Weekend kinda die? Activities planned for it? Will people from the area go home? Thanks for your feedback–hope some of your enthusiasm rubs off on my transfer!!!

^ I was wondering about this too. I live pretty close to nyu, just an hour away on the nj transit, and i was wondering if people around the area will go home for labor day weekend after welcome week.

Nothing over Labor Day. I live in the area myself and I will be heading home.

This might be a silly question, but as an incoming freshman I know that most of the friends you’ll have for your 4 years are made in the first few weeks. Will leaving during labor day weekend detriment your chances to make friends?

if two days makes that big a difference to your potential friends, they probably weren’t going to be long lasting friends anyway.

friends will understand that you might have family to see over Labor Day, or plans that you already made. you can always split the difference and stay through Saturday and then go home for Sunday and Monday. if you don’t have a class first thing Tuesday morning, you can return late Monday night or early Tuesday.

i’m getting dropped off at Palladium on Tuesday morning because my first class is at 2pm.

i often commute on the NJT to visit my boyfriend in Montclair. if i take a rush hour train in the morning to go to class, it takes 35-40 minutes to get to NYP. i often leave on an 8:15am train to get to a 9:30am class in Silver. luckily, i have afternoon classes this semester, whoo!

Yeah most locals go home or whatever they’ve planned for Labor Day. There will still be plenty of people around campus though.

Leaving for the weekend will be as detrimental as leaving for any other weekend. I.e., not detrimental in the least bit.

Good to know, I live nearby in NJ so I’ll probably come home for that one weekend and come back on monday.

Anyway, I was excited for stern orientation earlier, but now that I’ve found out how much it conflicts with the things I wanted to do on welcome week I’m kind of ****ed off about it. I’m sure whatever I get to go to will be fun, though. :)
