Some suggestions for Masters of Accounting

My son would like to enter a Masters of Accounting program. He's a econ major not getting interested in account, but more from a business perspecdtive. He's at the University of Michigan, and his first choice would be to stay for their program, but he needs some alternatives in case he doesn't get into that program.

He wants a program that is more business oriented than technical accounting (apparently Michigan's has this orientation). I think he'd like to stay in the Midwest.

So far, I'm gathering that Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana have good programs. True? Other suggestions?

If he wants a business concentration rather than technical accounting, he shoudl go for an MBA (or something similar) not an MSA. MSAs generally concentrate on technical accounting.

I agree, don’t do something you don’t like just because you think it will get you to where you want to be. It may do the exact opposite.

Thanks, but he’s a pretty smart kid. He’s spoken several times with the head of Michigan’s Macc program about what it is, and is confident this is the right program for him. I’m just looking to help him find some backup programs to appy to.

If he wants to stay in the Midwest I would suggest Illinois- possibly the top accounting program in the country.

Also, Texas has a good program.

Regardless, as long as he gets the requisite amount of hours (including required accounting classes) to sit for the CPA and graduates from Michigan with a good GPA he should do fine.
