some suggestions please

I recently started my college search and just wanted some input as to which schools I should look at. I don't want to spend too much time on schools that I only hope to get into but really don't have a chance in the world at. My stats are pretty modest, but here they are:

TX resident
3.88 Unweighted GPA
5.45 Weighted 6.0 scale, so 4.45 on the 5 i think
16/~520 (Within Top 5%)

SAT:
1900 (640 CR 630 M 630 W) - hoping to break 2000 this october

SAT II:
Math II - 720
US History - 720

APs:
US history - 4
English Lang - 5
Pysch - 5
Stat - 4
W. history - 4
I'm planning on taking Physics C, Calc BC, Eng Lit, US Govt, and Eco this year.

Extracurriculars are really weak. No leadership positions. I'm pretty much banking on my academics:
Mu Alpha Theta 11, 12
SNHS 11, 12
Red Cross 12
Y.E.S. 10, 11, 12
150+ volunteer hours at a local hospital

Awards, nothing big:
Various math achievement awards
Academic excellence
2nd place in an art show

Employment:
cashier/waitress summer 07
receptionist/book keeper summer 08

I'm also looking at either english or physics for a major, but not certain.

so...which schools would be good matches for me? I'm thinking UT Austin and UH for safeties. any other safeties?
also, how are my chances at any UCs...slim to none? hah, stanford maybe?

thanks. definitely appreciate any help.
*sorry if I put this in the wrong section.

LACs would be good for you...for technical colleges try Cal Poly

UCSC - match
UC Davis - match
UCI - match
UCSB - high match
UCLA - low reach
UCB - low reach
UT Austin - match
University of Houston - safety
University of Hawaii Manoa - match/high safety

thanks siglio.
after reading around, I thought UCs would more reach-ish considering i'm OOS.
i've never thought of hawaii. that sounds pretty nice :)

for LACs, I've received some info from oberlin and wellesley. how are my chances there?

any other suggestions?
they don't necessarily have to be west coast, but that's definitely where i'd like to be.

I am from the west coast...and I think you are too modest in your descriptions of your stats....."Accentuate the positive"...
In my opinion you have a Good GPA...solid SAT and "OK" EC's..that said... you really have done a lot of different EC's. So maybe in your essays you can wrap them all together and present a common passion.
Check out this site...you can plug in your GPA and SAT's and it gives you a % of if you can get into the UC's and some of the Ivies.

Uchance.com - Home

Good Luck and chance me back...Thanks! :)

thanks for the tip and link. do I even have a shot at the ivies??

I'm planning to write about my passion for english in my essays so that plus how well I've done in my english classes and AP should mean something to some of the higher level schools I'm looking at..hopefully. as far as my ECs, I'll admit their pretty much padding and very scattered, but I'll try to focus on the community service aspect.

any other match schools for me?

IMO you do have a shot at the Ivies. I know on this site everybody thinks you have to have a 2300 SAT's to even be considered but go to CollegeData: College Search, Financial Aid, College Application, College Scholarship, Student Loan, FAFSA Info, Common Application and look at the scattergram and you will see that "lower" SAT score's get in! Now I am sure they have some other "hook" or great story to tell...but it happens!
Shoot for the Stars!

yeah, the people around here are pretty intimidating stat wise. I have no idea what scattergram you're talking about, but that is reassuring. thanks.

any other match schools?

West Coast...UCIrvine...UCSanta Barbara...UCRiverside...UCSanta Cruz...UCDavis
These are match schools for you IMO.
good luck! :)

thanks. aside from UCs, any other schools I'd be well-matched at?
oberlin? wellesley?
more suggestions would be appreciated.
