Some Temple University Questions

Hey everyone :) First post, so sorry if this is in the wrong spot!

I'm a sophomore in highschool right now, which is kind of early to start looking into colleges, but I have some questions about temple. It sounds like a really good match for me... by the time I'll be applying, I'll have lived in PA long enough to establish residency so I'll get the in-state tuition price, it will be close to my new house, and it's in a city, which is where I really want to be.

Do they have anything for pre-law there? I really want to go to law school, so I think that's pretty important :p

Second, do I have a shot at getting in? So far, my GPA is 3.8 and I got a 1750 on my PSATs (I'm sure I'll do better on the real thing.). I really have no extracurriculars, so I should probably start... what activities (not sports) do they like to see?

Third, I know North Philly is notorious for being a high crime area. This is the main thing freaking me out, since I'm from a safe little farm town in the middle of nowhere jersey... If any of you have gone there/are there now, do/did you feel safe on campus walking around? Going off campus to hang out in safer parts of Philly? I don't think I'd go out past like 11pm, but if I wanted to go out in the middle of the day, would I get shot, or would I make it back to the campus alive?

This isn't as important, but I've heard temple is a REALLY diverse campus... is there a LBGT community or group or something like that? Are people there accepting of the gay community, or should I be afraid?

I think that's it, so thanks in advance!

I think that with your GPA and projected scores you should get in. My school is close to Philly so a ton of people end up going to Temple, and a lot of them have lower grades and, I’m sure, test scores. I’ve never really been around the temple area at night, but in the day time it’s not that bad. There are a lot of people in that area so it would be pretty safe and. If you spent most of your time around Broad Street, then you would be safer, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend walking around on the inner streets alone at night.

I have friends who go to temple university and they like it a lot. I’m not sure about the pre-law thing, but you look like a very competative applicant. You should get in with scholarship. I’ve heard a lot about temple being dangerous, but I’ve been in that area and I didn’t think it was bad. Temple is really diverse, and I’m sure people are accepting of the gay community.

I’m a Soph at Temple so:

We have a pre-law major, but it’s pretty pointless. You’re better off majoring in math/poli sci/history/language/etc.

It’s extremely safe, and the whole North Philly thing is overblown. There is security all around and plenty of lighting. You wont get shot anywhere close to campus. I walk around at all hours 2, 3, 4 AM, and the biggest problem I’ve had are homeless people/beggers asking for money. They’re generally very friendly, and won’t attack you or anything, but you’ll get used to people asking you for money. Oh, and I recommend you go out past 11 or else you wont have much of a social life. Again, it’s incredibly safe despite the location. I’m from the Philly 'burbs in one of the safest towns in the country and I havent had any issues.

Yes there is a community/group. Yes, people are accepting. Temple is like a less intense, more diverse NYU.

You’ll definitely get in with your grades! They want like a 3.1 or something like that. Just try to be well rounded with your EC’s, that’s what’s the most important thing in terms of them on college apps.

They dont want a specific GPA.

From the Temple website: GPA: B average, 3.0 range in college-prep courses. So I was a little off, but big whoop!
