Some things about stanford...

Some things i've heard about Stanford:
Palo Alto is really really boring
laid-back atmosphere
HUGE campus, hard to get around

However:
i bet the town where i live is even more boring
and i'm used to needing a car to get EVERYWHERE

What can students/faculty/whoever add to these?

Also, someone said that a 2230 is needed to get in, but what about ACT? I got a 34...

DEFINITELY not sure i'll get in, but i might as well try.

isn't LA close-by?

Lol. LA is in the south of California. SF is in the middle-north. It would be like a four hour drive, maybe more maybe less.

Yes, Palo Alto is boring, but there's so much to do on campus that you'll rarely feel the need to leave. About the atmosphere, the students seem laid-back, but they work very hard, hence the "duck padding furiously under-water" analogy.

LA is a good five hours away, I think.

The campus is big but certainly not too big to be a hassle. A lot of students have bikes.

or was it san diego... i remember seeing some large city around there.

oh wait.. maybe that was berkeley.
GAH.

okay, screw this. mapquest is failing me.

how many upper classmen and sophomores have cars at stanford? are they needed that much to get around to san francisco and things?

there is no required SAT/ACT score.

nah, San Diego's in the south as well. I think you mean San Fransisco - it's about 45 mins by train from campus.

Wow... I don't thnk I've seen so much bad information in one thread before... Ha.

Anyway, no, there is no "required" SAT/ACT, but the average does tend to be relatively high.

San Francisco is 45 minutes away, San Jose is about 25 minutes away.

LA is at least 6 hours away... San Diego is at least 8 or 9.

As for a car, from what I understand, it is nice to have the freedom of having one, but the Marguerite Campus Shuttle/Caltrain/BART is a decent enough way to get around the Bay Area.

ABronzan's information is right. (I live in San Francisco.)

Berkeley is closer to San Francisco - it's about a 30 minute BART ride.

34 is a great score. I got in with a 33, I know people who got in with lower.

Also, LA is a six hour drive, minimum. California's a big state. You might want to look at a map before you get here... I thought San Diego was in the north-western tip until 3rd grade. :-P

Cars are nice. I'm hoping to have a car next year. Biking is great until you want to go to Mountain View for dinner. Or Safeway. Or the real movie theatre. Or possibly take a non-Stanford dance or karate class.

As for how many actually have cars, I really don't have a clue. Maybe 30-40% of upperclassmen? That might be shooting for the moon though. You tend to see cars wherever you go, but not hundreds of them.
