hey, what is QQQ?

scholastically, medically and physically qualified

I was just thinking about this:

Does someone's declining an appointment really open up a slot for someone else? Looking at the Class of 08 stats, of the 1427 or so accepted, only about 1200 were admitted. If the Academy really did take all the declined appointments and give them to the alternates, wouldn't the number of candidates offered admission be the same as the number finally admitted?

I know this is not possible with the 1200 or so cap on each class.

Sorry to seem like the pessimist here...i'm hoping as much as anyone that if someone declines, they pass it on to me.

DMeix:
Your logic is flawed.

Say the target is 1200 for a particular class. They initially send out 1200 offers of appointment. If the offer is declined, then a new offer is extended to the next person on the wait list. This is why 1427 offers were extended, while 1227 were processed on I-day.

They know that some candidates have multiple LOA and offers of appointment.

Last year, an additional 9 were admitted after plebe summer had started, because of no-shows on I-day and some who were disqualified on I-day. (My understanding is that a couple suffered disqualifying injuries right before I-day.)

OH...ok, now it all makes sense

thanks
