some tips when you go to orientation

Good tips.

Great tips! I was at orientation on Wednesday- Friday. I had a great time. Everyone was SO nice and helpful, and I loved my room mate.

My tips-
Just be aware they wake you up at 6:45 AM by banging on your doors and blasting music- our songs were “When I Grow Up” and “Circus”.
Don’t stress about registering for classes. I was one of the last people to go, and I still have a really good schedule :)

They never played music on our floor. :(

I woke up way before they banged on doors and yelled.

Got back from my orientation yesterday. JMan’s post pretty much hit the nail on the head, but just a couple things I’ll add:

If you are positive you failed an AP exam, don’t bother telling them about it. It will take some serious convincing for them to let you take that class then in the summer. They almost were going to make me wait until fall to take ENC1101 (english) because of a pending AP Lit score. Having taken 5 AP exams senior year, my only other options were electives, and I didn’t want to take two electives to start out.

There really is no wait to register for classes. I did it on their computers and was in and out in 15 minutes. You can change your schedule I believe until June, so just register for the classes you want, and then you can swap out the professor’s after looking at Rate My Professor. I found out the English professor I had chosen was a slow grader and didn’t really teach much and traded it out for a teacher who had a quality rating of 4.9/5 by 9 people.

The orientation sessions are long, and they wake you up at 6 AM on day 2. Going along with Jman’s suggestion, if you drove up yourself like I did, get more than 5 hours of sleep. I’m from Tampa, and it’s about a 4 hour drive.

The Cirp Survey is not mandatory. Don’t waste your time.

Also, they added an 11 PM curfew. Not really that big of a deal, just don’t make plans to go out after that.

Well, no laptop for me then.

Anyhow I’m still concerned about choosing classes since they don’t release the AP score until early -mid July.
I am also waiting on 5 AP scores that may drastically change my schedule.
Matt was it June or thru July that you could change your schedule?

I may just try and sign up for these crosscultural (X) & diversity (Y) courses that we can’t get out of then first semester.

Any recommendation of couses that meet multiple requirements?

How can they put a curfew on you? That is pretty unethical, and I doubt you’d get in trouble if you went past it anyways.

Are you doing summer session? I don’t remember exactly when the summer window ends, but they have a drop/add section during the first week of classes. For the fall, registration begins July 13th at 8 AM and lasts until July 31, though if you have orientation before that, you’d be able to register earlier I guess? When are the Fall orientations?

As for which courses you should take, you must take 8 gordon rule classes. Oddly, math counts for Gordon Rule, history classes count for Gordon Rule (and you must take a history class), and of course writing/English classes count for gordon rule. They will advise you on that though, but you should definitely take electives which meet the gordon rule requirements.

For the curfew, from what I heard, somebody got drunk and drove off to Georgia. Supposedly if you were caught leaving Wildwood hall you would have a hold placed on your registration and you would have to go through their discipline system.

I know that for Fall they had originally put me June 3 - 5 for orientation. I got it changed to 10-12, but Fall orientations start at least then…

Could I ask a really dumb question. What do the moms wear to these orientation sessions? I know there is a lot of walking, so comfy shoes are in order, but are capris the limit or can we wear shorts? Thanks.

wear what is comfortable. it’s casual. when i was there, i think most people, parents included, wore jeans, but that is because it was kind of cold.

I have a question about meals while at orientation.
What meals have we paid for with our orientation fees? Do I, as a parent, need to get breakfast before I go to the sessions or are they included.

I believe the only meal not eaten at eithr the Fresh Food Company or Swannee Dining Hall is the breakfast your first day. You get a $5 coupon per person to use for that meal at Einestein’s or Starbucks on campus. Be warned the lines are very long that AM at those locations.
Dinner that check in night is also not covered for parent or student. They have some sort of desert thing at the stadium but it is not a meal.
Suggest you eat before you get there.

First day full day - (first session starts at 8AM) Breakfast on your own…if you are in a hotel - grab a bite.
Lunch - Fresh food (part of orientation package)
Dinner - Swannee Dining Hall (part of package)
2nd day 1/2 day (starts at 7AM)- Breakfast - Swannee Dining Hall (part of package)
$5 Flex bucks - I used it for lunch anywhere on campus (Arbys, Chili’s, Star-bucks, Einstein’s, etc…)
