it makes me upset that Duke even accepted transfer aps, when they plan to take .5 percent of them, so tell me, how does duke evaluate us, there is no way they are going through all 600 for 7 ppl, either its lacross players or they are breezing by them to see 7 extraordinary ppl

I'm pretty sure that information is not true because I talked to the admissions office yesterday and they said they had 50 spots for the sophomore class alone. Now maybe they were lying to both of us because they thrive on our neurosis...

This might be a stupid assumption, but you would think that this whole lacrosse thing would negatively impact enrollment for next year. Personally, I wouldn't send my kid to a school that is becoming notorious for rape, white elitism, and racism. If next year's class under-enrolled, would that open up more spots?

I didn't even apply to Duke, but it's a just a thought for those who did...

My dad really wanted me to apply to Duke as a transfer student but I said no. I want UNC CH and that is it. After reading this thread I guess it was a good idea.

I agree. I do not understand why they would even have a transfer application if they do not have an offical transfer class or reserve a small portion of slots for transfers. 7tenths of a percent for 600 applicants; you might as well not accept transfers at all.

Who even wants to go to Duke after the rape case? The place is a plantation.

jeeze guys...you can't dismiss duke just because of a couple morons made some stupid decisions.

Tell me if this statement makes sense: Duke is a terrible institution because three lacrosse players are on trial for rape.

K well I was being partly facetious. But it is true that the school has always been known, long before this case, for its racial diversity and tension problems.

Some unfortunate news for Duke transfers: The lacrosse players are unfortunately not an abberation, from what I hear (several of my HS classmates attend Duke) many students are exceptionally arrogant, and this report is coming from people who attended a snobby elite boarding school.

What school doesn't have arrogant students? Make a list so I can write it down.

The majority of schools have 0 arrogant students Mcshaaf, clearly your awareness level is quite low.

Janel, do us all a favor and spare your remarks until it is proven that the crime was committed. An arrest does not necessarily mean guilt. I, on the other hand, will not rule them innocent, either. Neither of us know the specifics of the case and thus cannot speculate to their guilt or innocence.

Second of all, let's stop making this a race issue. This is not a race issue, it is a sexual assault issue.

Read the details, Kudos. Any rational jury member would, of course, only want to believe where the evidence points (not to what makes the school look pretty). Clearly, you have yet to read up on the specifics.

Who are you? The lacrosse players' lawyer???

I know they were arrested, but how does this prove their guilt? You're not being rational.

I'm not defending their actions, I'm simply pointing out that it's a travesty that race is being brought into this, much like the OJ Simpson trial. This is not a case of whether these players are racist but rather whether they committed a sexual assault.

By the way, I'm in no way affiliated or even like Duke University. In fact, I despise their basketball team, but I think it's a shame that this has become a black/white issue. Did anyone call Kobe racist for allegedly raping a white girl? Nope. And Kobe (much like the white majority in lacrosse) plays in a sport that is dominated by one race. Double standard, I suppose?

So far, the evidence we know about does not show their guilt at all. You shouldn't judge a school on a couple of people. Also, they have not been proven guilty so calling them rapists is wrong.

This is a race issue - black leaders like Jesse Jackson are exploiting it as such, so it becomes one.

Anyone remember Tawana Brawley?

Unfortunately, you're right about it becoming one. I'm sorry to see it handled this way. If justice were not being served, that'd be another story. JJ needs to keep his business out of it.

No one has been charged in the case, but the allegations have rocked the community. Jackson he has yet to speak with the woman, but said his group pledged to pay for her tuition even if her story proves false.

Unbelievable. Yes, I'm aware that two have been charged, but that still doesn't justify the actions prior to it.

Edit: Yes, I remember the Tawana Brawley case. Not in the sense that I remember when it happened but learned of it later. It's girls like that, that make sexual assault cases to be taken less serious than they should. I hope this new victim isn't doing the same. Who knows though?

I think this case has Tawana Brawley written all over it - I think these players are innocent and think that their whereabouts and DNA will exonerate them. Unfortunately for them, they will be stigmatized by this forever.

IF I am wrong, lock them up.

Hey guys, I transferred to Duke last year, and I'm one of the heads of the transfer board now, so if you have any questions--or end up getting in!!--please feel free to contact me with any and all questions. I absolutely cannot wait to meet the new transfer class--the transfers at Duke are hands down some of the most amazing kids on campus. Period.
