Some Writing questions

I have been reading this nice forum for a while and finally decided to post a few questions.I hope I will find some good answers.

I am preparing for the Nov SAT I reasoning test and now I am doing some WR practice tests.A friend of mine has sent me a few tests which do not contain answer keys and I cannot know if my answers are correct.I am aiming at 800 on WR ,which means that every question matters and I do not want to face anything unfamiliar on the real test. That is why I am seeking your help. Here are the questions:

5.(Asim worked at the big kitchen table,he had cleared it) by pushing books and papers aside or stacking them in piles.
A)As it is
B)Working at the kitchen table,Asim had cleared it
C)Working at the big kitchen table, which Asim cleared it
D)Asim`s work took place at the big kitchen table, being cleared by him
E)Asim worked at the big kitchen table, which he had cleared.

A,C ,and D are totally absurd ,so B or E should be correct.I put E ,but I am not sure if it the correct one.

9.Scientists are still trying to account for sudden deaths among gray whales but (speculating) that several events prevented them from gorging on the tiny shrimplike creatures that they typically feed one.
A)speculating
B)in speculation
C)in speculating
D)to speculate
E)speculate

'but' before 'speculating' makes this one unusual.I eliminated B C and D and it was between A and E.Again ,I put E but do not feel comfortable with it.

11.In October if 1922,25-year-old Amelia Earhart flew a bright yellow biplane ,nicknamed ''Canary'', (to 14 000 feet - almost three miles - and set ) a new altitude record for women flyers (shouldnt it be fliers ? )

A)as it is
B)to 14 000 feet - which was almost three miles - which set
C)14 000 feet ,to lmost three miles up,and that set
D)up three miles while she set ,at 14 000 feet,
E)reaching 14 000 feet,or almost three miles,which would set

Again,I eliminated B,C, and D ,but this time I put A .Somehow 'which would set' in E did not sound right .

12.At the trade show, two interactive computer games attracted (crowds of) visitors who (have been disappointed) the previous year because earlier versions (allowed for) (so little) input by the player.

I put C because I thought ''allowed for'' did not sound well but later the dictionary proved that 'for' is fine.So ,E ?

19.In her (1913 novel) , O pioneers!, Willa Cather (portrayed) the early settlers in Nebraska,(characterizing) such types (including) either exploiters or stewards of the land.

I think the answer is D.Should it be 'that include' ,instead of ''including'' ?

21.(Ever Since) Sigmund Freud (developed) his theories about human behavior, psychoanalysts (have been) (in search for) a better understanding of conscious thought processes.

I put 'in search for' as 'search' goes with 'of' but later when I checked in the dictionary ,I found out that 'search' can also go with 'for' ,for example, search for solution or idea. What do you think ?

23.WHen we asked Alex why he (was looking) (so fit) lately ,he (smugly) replied that he had changed his diet and (began) swimming for an hour every day.

Should 'began' be changed to 'begun' ?

24.(Hardly ever) (have) the paintings of any artist (so benefited) from the techniques of drawing (as Picasso).

D ?

26.Although readers generally admire the poet,(some argue) that he puts (so much of) his own life into his poeims that it (was) nearly impossible to understand them (without knowing) his biography.

I put E .What do you think ?

28.Many years of careful maintenance will increase the chance that (your) old automobile will continue to run (as smooth) as a new model, (but there) is no guarantee that your car will last forever.

Should ''smooth'' be changed to ''smoothly ?

29.With each of the two sisters (demanding) (their) own bed,the family (was forced) to spend more money than it (had anticipated) for hotel.

I am pretty sure B is the correct answer since 'their' must be changed to 'her'

So, these are the questions.I am almost sure that the rest of the section is correct.

All your answers before 12 are correct except maybe for #9. I think it should be “to speculate” or answer choice D because of parallelism. However, E sounds more plausible so i would go with that one.

12–I think it should be “have been disappointed” as the error. It should be “had been disappointed” because the visitors were disappointed before the two interactive computer games attracted crowds of visitors at the trade market. Maybe im wrong?

19–the idiom is “such…as” not “such…including”

21–Your answer is correct but for the wrong reason. It should be “have been SEARCHING” because it’s in the present perfect continuous tense.

23–your answer and justification are correct.

24–D is correct because you are comparing things of the wrong nature. You’re comparing the paintings of any artist to Picasso himself, which is illogical. It should be “as THOSE of Picasso.”

26–honestly, I think there’s something wrong with the sentence. Shouldnt the “it” be “they” because the antecedent is the “paintingS”? Because of that, i think the error should be the “was”? However, if the test booklet does not say so, then there’s no error.

28–it should be “smoothly”. So yeah, you’re correct.

For the last one, you are also correct.

Good job.!

So,basically I only got q12 wrong. It was so stupid error ,how could I put ‘‘have been’’ in a sentence that is in past tense …
19 and 21 correct ,although correct for the wrong reason

BTW,about q21 ,are you sure it should be ''have been searching for ‘’ instead of ''have been in a search for ?

Im positive b/c there are certain cues in the sentence that necessitate the use of “have been searching for.” One is the fact that the sentence says “Ever since…”; that shows the sentence should in the present perfect continuous form, meaning that the search started before and led up to the present. So yeah, 100% sure.

‘’#26–honestly, I think there’s something wrong with the sentence. Shouldnt the “it” be “they” because the antecedent is the “paintingS”? Because of that, i think the error should be the “was”? However, if the test booklet does not say so, then there’s no error.‘’

Ironically, you were right for the wrong reasong. It should be ‘is’ instead of ‘was’ simply because the sentence is in present tense ;)

^LOL. That is another justification for that answer. HAHA.

What do u think of this one

Now that Michiko (finished) the research, she feels (reasonably) (confident) (about writing) her paper on the (rise of) the progressive movement in the United States.

I am assuming the error is ‘‘finished’’ .Shouldnt i be changed to present perfect (has finished) ? Or maybe ‘‘no error’’ ?

^ The answer’s A.
