People I am seriously going to cry..... Can someone please help me figure out the SAT curves!! Here is one exapmle of how puzzling these curves truly are. On one practice test from "11 Practice Tests For the SAT," I had a CR raw score of 46 out of 65. This, according to that curve ( Test # 3), gave me a 700 CR score. On the very next test I got the same raw score, 45, but my CR score was 590!!!!!!! Why was the curve so different. THAT is a HUGE difference. The test wasn't that much harder! At First, I thought that this kind of psychotic curve disparity between tests was simply a flaw with the practice test book. However, I soon realized, after taking the march and the June SAT's, that....NO...these crazy curves actually exist. On the march test I got a 9 essay and I missed 10 multiple choice and I recieved a 700 Writing score. On the may Test I got a 9 essay and missed 9 multiple choice and I got a 640!!! I almost cried! I did better, but my score was 60 points worse. My math and English scores also got worse ( about 30-40 points worse!) even though I got the same/or more questions right! What should I do?????

What should I do?? Should I study and retake in october? why!! the curve may just be harder and my score my get even worse?? This is the most depressing feeling ever. My parents are seriously thinking about calling the SAT people and suing...WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!!!!

Everyone is so sue-happy these days... regardless, just keep studying and getting better. Think of it like this, if you got a perfect score on the MC and a 12 on the essay, you'd get 800 no matter what. So just keep studying and achieving to the point where CB cannot take points away that (you believe) are rightfully yours.

The problem could also have to do with the source. I always recommend only working with CB books (though even there you have problems with the curve for the new test).

Falcon is right. It doesn't matter what the curve is, from a practical standpoint, because all you want to do is maximize your score anyway. So put the curve out of your mind and just focus on answering or skipping each question as you come to it.

And you can only sue for damages--you'd have to show somehow that the CB was responsible because you bought a book by PR and it frustrated you, and that this frustration cost you something that could be measured in dollars. Which maybe could be done, but it'd be a stretch :)

in my extensive preparation for the old SAT (1540), and begun preparation for the new SAT (which I only plan to take for my safety schools and National Merit) and based on my friends' experiences, I must conclude that the new SAT is poorly created, badly administered, hastily and improperly graded (in terms of essays), and is just pure bull$hit.

Anyone care to agree?

you haven't even taken the real thing yet, so how would you know?

moral of the story: only trust the blue book for scores and curves...and probably for tests too

America in short---> sueing everyone and everything

Wow, I should have tested in March! In June I got a 9 essay, missed 3 for a 700. Consider yourself lucky.

About the practice tets, don't use the 11 Practice New SATs from PR. I used it for 2 tests but threw it out. Use the Real SAT books by Collegeboard and also some of the old Barrons and Kaplans books for the old SAT. Don't worry too much about the scale on each tests from each company, just try to get as much right as possible

As for the curve on the actual SAT, there's nothing you can do about it. All the students across the America are suffering the same thing, so quit complaining. The curves are established so that testing from different dates can be compared equally.

"n the march test I got a 9 essay and I missed 10 multiple choice and I recieved a 700 Writing score. On the may Test I got a 9 essay and missed 9 multiple choice and I got a 640!!!"
Its weird that you got a 700 with 10 wrong and a 9 essay. I took the March SAT as well and got 700 with 5 wrong and a 10 . The curve for the May exam seems more realistic.

Don't worry too much about the curve. Try to get as much right as possible. Remember, everybody else suffers as much as you do but some still manage to do better. Try harder and take the October exam. I'm taking it in October as well, my second and last try for the SAT>

For one thing, the essay grading process is ridiculously retarded.

As a fact, each grader has approx. 60 seconds to ready your essay. Now what the hell are they supposed to be grading in one minute? That is the stupidest thing I have heard.

As for the MC for math and CR, just get everything right. Then you will be guaranteed an 800. If they still take points away then you can sue them =P

"My parents are seriously thinking about calling the SAT people and suing..."

That was a joke, right? Tell them to get real...

i think she was serious. she cries over stupid sat tests so dont be suprised if there parents do something like that. (its hereditary)
