someone already got in...

Someone in my school (in NC) has already gotten an acceptance letter from Duke, and she applied for Regular Decision. I thought they gave out ALL admissions in late march. Does Duke give admissions decisions in waves?

Did she show you the letter?

No

but for some reason, people have been talking about several people getting in already.

i have seen no letters.

could this be a case of people mistaking likely letters as acceptance letters? or perhaps they're just straight lying...

There are a few likely letters I think that tell the students that they've been granted admittance (But I think only 40 people or so get that letter). I doubt that you would be able to find 2 people in your state that got such a letter let alone more than one in your school. I think your friends might be lying.

Speaking of which, i just got my Itinerary for BSAI! :D

yeah, duke doesn't send acceptance letters in waves because it's not rolling. especially this early. the only people that find out early are potential merit scholarship semifinalists/finalists and the people who get "likely letters" can probably assume that they've gotten in too.

ooh congrats Rosh420

i do believe that this person could possibly be one in those 40. she got full-rides to like 10 schools, the morehead (however you spell it) to chapel hill, and she's a minority...and in-state. idk, it's possible.

yeah, i knew that duke was not rolling...but then this rumor went out. haha, maybe i shouldn't believe everything i hear!

thanks everyone.

There are 350 likely letters. Of those about 40ish move on to become finalists for some scholarships. The finalists for other scholarships get acceptance as well.

Ok, drpeepper. She could very well be speaking the truth. But for the "others" that you have been hearing say they got into Duke, it's extremely unlikely that they're speaking the truth because, as said, only about 40 applicants learn that they've been admitted early.

Perhaps our friends took their likely letters as acceptances.. that might be the case (I think you alredy pointed that out).

Rosh420 - a likely letter is the same thing as an acceptance (unless you do something really bad, but even with real acceptances they can still rescind).

either a likely letter or liar

someone at my school (in SC) also said they got accepted to Duke.

Did they receive notification through email or an actual letter?

350 people get likely letters...a likely letter = a guaranteed acceptance granted you don't murder someone. Thus, I'd assume that the kids at your school got them. It is certainly not uncommon for more than one kid at a school to get them. I along with two other students received them at my school. I doubt they are lying about it.

Likely letter is just a terminology adopted from Dartmouth which started
it as a way to get around IVY rules.

The letter I or a number of others received are called likely letters on CC but
tell us we will be accepted/admitted with the usual caveats (don't tickle
somebody to death, etc). For all purposes they are admit letters albeit early.
What is missing is the attendant offer of financial aid.

At school I am particualarly keeping quite about the Duke letter because there
are a number of BB fanatics who will be quite upset (interestingly they could not care
less about my Stanford, MIT or Caltech acceptances)

hm, so both likely letters And the 42 merit finalists are guaranteed acceptances?

because i am one of the 42, i am wondering, do schools like duke really rescind if your grades drop some, or is it not that big of an issue any more????

last year's acceptance letter said that as long as your grades stayed above a C, they would do nothing. if your grades drop below a C, they will "review your application," whatever that means...i also don't know if they meant C average or any Cs, so if i were you i wouldn't let any grades go below a B-.

oh, okay, that is definitly maneagable.
many thanks!

I think I will have all A's and a C in AP english. How bad is that?

That's not bad. I am sure they will overlook the C.

I don't know if that's true about the 42 finalists and those who receive likely letters. I am one of 50 finalists for the Robertson Scholars Program at Duke, which started as 150 semi-finalists. Each of the semifinalists received e-mails in late February telling us that our selection meant that we had gotten into Duke:

"Congratulations! I am delighted to inform you that have been chosen as a semi-finalist for the Robertson Scholars Program at Duke University...Your selection as a semifinalist for the Robertson Scholars Program means that
you have been accepted to Duke University. As with all offers of admissions, this offer ultimately depends upon your maintaining high standards of academic performance and personal behavior..."

bottom line is, I think a lot more than 42 people know that they've been accepted.
