Someone at my School Stole My College Essay

Today, my counselor brought me in to announce to me that someone in my class of 117 stole my UC essay since every senior has to hand in a written work for a college teacher rec. A teacher was given two copies of my essay so that's how they found out. I was given a copy of the essay that the other student handed in. It was WORD for WORD!

I was very shocked and ****ed off that someone would steal my essay and be that stupid. I tried to investigate how my essay was stolen. First of all, yes, I did ask people on CC and did send my essay over the net. Second of all, I only showed two very trusty friends, who would never betray me, my essay. So, of course, I thought someone on CC stole it. Surprisingly after checking my revisions, I realized that someone on CC couldn't have stolen it because my essay was in a different editing stage and didn't have a phrase that I added in like in September that I never showed anyone from CC.

I tried investigating who stole my essay and asked a number of people at school, but my results were fruitless. And the sad thing is that my essay was about working at Target. The person who stole my essay never even worked at Target. Who would be that stupid to steal an essay that doesn't even relate to their ECs?

If anything, watch out on CC with your essays. I'd rather suggest that essays shouldn't be handed off to a stranger over the net. Even though I'm certain that a CC-er didn't steal my essay, you can't trust people. College admissions makes people desperate.

Did you
(a) leave your disk drive lying around, or your document open?
(b) drop your essay somewhere?

There are always accidents and whatnot.

I've sent out essays before, but they were very, very unique and I doubt anyone else could have used them without altering them significantly. (e.g. they make references to summer programs that 40 people get accepted to every year).

A. Nope
B. Nope, kinda

No one from school has ever been on my computer.

I did however leave my essays in the teacher's/counselor's office for required recs. Yes, they were alone for a bit but my teachers received them still. Why would someone go into a teacher's office to steal my rec? Who would stoop that low?

The only ways the person could've stolen my essay were hacking accounts or my computer or blatantly stealing my file from a teacher's office.

Very true. Well said sparetire. I'm sorry to hear of such an incident occuring. Just hold your head up high and remember that you have integrity and class. That may not mean anything to you now...give yourself ten years and it'll matter a lot.

Also, I know you're going to hate what I say next....but how can you be sure your two trusty friends didn't do it? You yourself said that college admissions makes people desperate. I'm not saying they did it; in fact, they probably didn't. What I am saying, however, is to suspect everyone equally. Just because someone appears to be a friend doesn't mean that they are. You're a high school senior, and i'm sure you've experienced this. At an area high school there was a young individual whose best friend stole his essay and resume. Be aware all CC-ers....

"I did however leave my essays in the teacher's/counselor's office for required recs. Yes, they were alone for a bit but my teachers received them still."

Does your school have student assistants? Students employed by the school? This may have been where the run in occured?

There's some pretty sick people out there. ):

it doesnt really matter if he stole your essay, since its obvious that it's yours. just think of his punishment as a drop of respect by teachers and peers. his rec's will probably suck too, since his act affects his integrity.

I'm certain that my two friends didn't do it because my counselor told me that they didn't. So it couldn't have been them BUT it could have been someone who hacked into their myspace accounts (where I messaged the essay).

"Does your school have student assistants? Students employed by the school? This may have been where the run in occured?"

No. People rarely enter a teacher's office unless they have to speak with them. But yes, doors are open and there's obviously no security guard near the offices.

Hopefully, on Monday, more information will be discovered. I've been employing my sleuthing skills. I feel like Sherlock Holmes.

Good luck, Sherlock!

You may try messaging, Tom (?), and asking if there has been suspicious activity on your account...or something like that.

Lol this whole thread about college essays shouldnt even be here
ur essay should be ur own written work and expression
why have other people u dont know tell u about what u wrote?
