Someone cheated off my PSAT!

At my large public high school the student body is practically worthless. Our school avg ACT is 18, and very few people ever go out of state for college (35% of our class goes to Comm College, 50% doesn't go to college, and 15% go on to a 4 year college). So I pride myself on how hard I work to get out of here and achieve my goals. On Monday we got our PSAT results back and on Tuesday I found out that someone else had a NMSF qualifying score (I got a 232, he got a 228).

The catch is that he is a B student, he wasn't in our gifted program (he tried and failed to get the 125 on an IQ test that is required for admission) and is a known cheater among the students (though not the faculty). During the test we were seated at small, circle tables. I am left handed so I angle my test accordingly, which (I assume after this!) makes it easy for the person to your left to copy off you. I was so focused on the test that I didn't pay attention to either of the people at my table and never considered that either could be cheating off me. When I found out my score I was EXTREMELY excited b/c I got a 201 last year and I really wanted to be a NMSF. Then I found out his score and I was like hmmm thats wierd (since the other kids that I consider my intellectual peers got low 200s) b/c he isn't that smart and gets Bs in regular classes (he has never taken an AP class as opposed to the 4 most of us "smart kids" have taken). He cheated off my friend in French constantly last year and she always had to cover her paper.

He may have legitamately got it, but a 228 is such a high score and the fact that he sat next to me seems to much of a coincedence. I told my guidance counselor but she doesn't have access to what answers he got right and wrong (if he got the same qs I got wrong he cheated, if he got qs that I got wrong correct then he is just an undiscovered genius).

I would really like to get this resolved b4 our break next week, but I don't know what to do.
What do you guys think? Should I be so irritated about it and try to "convict" him, or should I just shrug it off and move on.
It just offends me so much and ethically it just devastates me that someone would cheat on a test that has no significance other than to reward those who are intelligent (he had nothing to lose if he did bad, and yet he cheated)

Your evidence is most damning, I agree!!!

What kind of high school used an IQ test for admission to honors?

It sounds like your ego has gotten the best of you.
Just because you don't deem this person to be intelligent doesn't mean he isn't. Perhaps he... studied.

It wasn't to get into an "honors" class
It was called REACH and it was for kids with high iqs (but it was only in middle school 6-8)
It was just a class that challenged us in different ways (we just did a bunch of experiments and learned about random stuff)
I was just pointing out that he tried really hard on that test and his IQ wasn't above 125, whereas my friends (who are all above that and they work hard in school) only got 193s to 207s

he only missed 4/145ish qs by studying?
I mean i know what your saying (which is why I shrugged it off for the last two days)
but people keep telling me that they think he cheated and it just makes a lot of sense
(more than he just got smart overnight)

If you had evidence of his cheating, the time for that would have been the day of the test.

The only way to find out, is to confront the guy yourself.

I agree that it may just be your ego talking. If he was cheating the time to told would have been after the test. Also, if you tell the teachers or other people, I'm sure they will think that you are just jealous and insecure. If he did cheat, it will show on his SAT scores. To qualify, don't you have to take the SAT anyway so that they can be sure you did not cheat on the PSAT? Anyway, I would not bother worrying about it because their is nothing you can do. If he did cheat then his SAT scores will show (which counts way more than the PSAT) and he won't qualify for National Merit if his SAT scores don't match up.

Let his SAT scores do the talking (hopefully he doesn't cheat then). I personally find it extremely difficult to see how a B student in regular courses known as a tried-and-true cheater can get a 228 on a test where he happens to be sitting next to someone who earns a score only 4 points higher. It seems a bit sketchy.

How is the PSAT a test that "[rewards] those who are intelligent"? It's a test of whether you can reason and whether you can use what you've learned in school over the years. You don't need a 125+ IQ for that.

I'm also not sure how you can automatically assume he's not smart. He's a B student? Some kids don't try in school. Einstein was a classic academic "failure" when he was young. He didn't score high enough on the IQ test? There's plenty of evidence that suggests that IQ tests are predominently subjective.

And trust me, I'm not a bitter person speaking, I've been in "gifted" since I was five.

Common misconception...

That's cutting it close. Especially since it's not a 1 for 1 scale. I am sure you are aware of all the technicalities and I don't need to waste my time explaining. Haha.

But, I'd just let it go. Make sure you don't sit next to him on the SATs.

Innocent until proven guilty IMO. But I don't even see why you want to go so far, drop it.

This part is pure ********, get over it. Looks like you got what you deserved. Get off your ego, for the last time what is up with these people on here thinking that high score on this so called PSAT/SAT tests = I'mgodinintelligenceolol?

"I told my guidance counselor but she doesn't have access to what answers he got right and wrong"

That is BS, schools have a copy of all the score reports. If you think he cheated you could ask them to compare it.

Stop being a snitch and a tool.

I see it this way
1. You have little/no evidence to back this up
2. You're already a NMSF. It's not like he scored higher than you.
3. Making a claim like that would entail school investigation, possible CB investigation, and waste too much of your time and energy. You have better things to do.

OOH MY GOD!!....some other people in the world are smart!!!

it woont matter...if he really cheated off of you then he will never get a good enough SAT score to actual be national merit. chill out.

plus what jamesford is completely true

Well one of my straight C student friends got a 75, 76, and 75 no improvement from last year.

The elitist tone your post gives off is incredible. Seriously, I haven't heard people speak like that in a really long time (especially not in public)

I just thank God that I don't go to your school.
