Someone give me a summary of Information Systems!

I've been heavily researching this major because I think I am interested in it.
But every website I go to, including CMU, only broadly gives me an idea of what IS is.
I've been looking around CC too but nothing really helps.

Can anyone give me a good description about what you do as a IS major at CMU?
What is it? What do you do?

I'm trying to write my CMU essay about my major but I'm sort of lost.

It's a fushion of technology and business right?

I just applied ED to IS at CMU

You are pretty close. Information systems is a mixture of Computer Science and Business/Economics, at least that is how I’ve interpreted it.
This venn diagram helps.

Speaking with someone in the program in my visit, he explained to me that there is a large business approach to it. It is dealing with making programs that maximize efficiency and are able to take all the data given in front you you and interpret it in a way to make “things” better.

Don’t quote that word for word though, maybe I said something wrong.
If you haven’t read this… Do it
[Showcase of Projects - H&SS Information Systems - Carnegie Mellon University](<a href=“CMU IS Projects”>CMU IS Projects)
it is a great representation of what IS majors “do”

This is NOT a CS degree-- there’s no math! (beyond the basics)

You’re essentially an applied programmer.

From what I’ve seen, it’s very similar to industrial engineering, but a bit more computer-based.
